Bills No Help to 97 Rock

According to reliable (Rochester) sources who have access to Buffalo ratings, the Bills were nearly as bad on the radio as they were on the field. Traditionally, 97 Rock dominates the Fall ratings in Men 25-54 on the weekend and although it maintained the #1 position on weekends in the Fall 2009 book, the ratings were nowhere near the station's Fall 2008 mark. Some of 97 Rock's share may have moved to the Edge, but the total share of both stations' ratings for the Bills was down from Fall 2008. Perhaps more telling, WGR moved to 3rd place in morning drive while 97 Rock slipped to 6th place Persons 25-54. WGR performed even better with Men 25-54, moving to first place in morning drive while 97 Rock slipped to 3rd place. Guess Citadel deserved the rights reduction it negotiated from the Bills prior to declaring bankruptcy. Or maybe the Bills got revenge. Karma and like that.

9, WGR #3 in AM Drive, Persons 25-54? 97 Rock #6? That's hard to believe! Me thinks there's something fishy here! I'd like to see those WGR diaries.

I'd like to see those WGR diaries

If you saw those diaries, or any others for that matter...you would be appalled. Appalled that the entire industry is based on such things. Having seen many diaries in Beltsville...I have never wanted to own corporate stock in the "big boys"...as I knew it would be like Vegas...."roll them dice". ;D
that's all.

These numbers certainly are intriguiging, but the Bills stunk the joint out (I say that as a season ticket holder who went to EVERY home game) so it's likely fans and listeners spent a lot of time bitching about the team's poor play and listened to the station that gave them a chance to bitch (I've seen the movie and have the t-shirt.) Still, you'd expect 97 Rock would have shown better, so who knows.

As to the diary system. Like heyday, I've seen some verbatims and analyses that make you scratch your head. It's great when your station gets kissed. It sucks when the bottom falls out because of 12 people in Lockport or Hamburg who turned in "cut and paste" diaries. I'd rather have a station that stayed in the 7's through thick and thin with top five P 25-54s rather than one that goes wildly from 5 to 9 and then back down. Really though, is PPM going to be that much better? It's turned the whole game upside down in larger markets, but more than likely, it's a roll of the dice whichever system is used.

Pick your poison.

The diary system can be jobbed with promotions and outside advertising.

The PPM records what people hear, regardless of whether they're listening or not.

Sample size within many individual demographics is so small that a few respondents can have a major impact on the results.

Bet your job on that...

I've got my own issues.... :)

Haven't done much research into PPM, but is it true that the sample is about half that of the diary, and that respondents stay in the pool for TWO YEARS??

Hey kids...PPM is not your friend.

In other parts of this country chicken s#%t managers are playing to the PPM by offering "more music in the morning" morning shows and sending guys to the shower who have been on the air for years in a market. Job gone over freakin methodology! Let's give 'em some more of that IPOD programming that leaves such a lasting impression. "Hey did you hear Magoo play back-to-back-to-back Bad Company this morning?"

And...no jocks at Jack...and they tell ya, "We're crazy...we play what we want to!" Here's a novel idea, how about playing what your listeners want. That's something I've NEVER been able to reconcile. Requests. "It's a tiny percentage of our audience that's calling 'em in." Well Moe, it's an even TINIER segment of everybody's audience who decides your fate at the pay window. In one town there's a story about a guy who strapped the PPM monitor to his dog.

I'm just saying.

yea, the 6-10 season did not help , but

...i know, i'm usually wrong on this,
however is it possible the Buffalo market
needs a break from 97 Rock ?

hears the clunk, of every . . . jaw droppin, but
take the station *you * like best. after hearing it
for a book or two,(or a "regular person") ...for a season or two,
you get arrrgh w/ your station.

ie: 90s on nine (xm) i *already know* what is next, or the same bumper over and over.
Perhaps, the overload of one artist, i happen to randomly click several one-hour
playlists..and discovered, its bowe, pink floyd, and _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (pick one of the others
97 rock plays to death)! just in different order, each hour...now they did throw a
mid/late 80s hit in there, but went back to the safe sure shots..

on chr-radio, this problem is way more obvious and leads to discussions/debates
alot faster. . .it seems the [same]top 3, get the most spins, and the
courtesty 'gold'(in chr,a song from a year ago), gets the novelity play.

just because the artist is "vintage" doesnt mean, the same thing is not happening.
the occassional, guns'roses, metallica, is thrown in, but then, its the same ol' same ol'
(i understand, that is the "DESIGN"of a format") but once your audience is bored,
music, sweepers and talents can only do so much.

hearing a song, u just stopped singing in your head, the day before yesterday....
well, it just doesnt have the impact it did -72 hours ago.
...this leads to boredom, and that leads to other outlets.

reeely ?!
getting tired of expressing myself,
and having to attach a translation!!!?
wt....?
-
BASICALLY: perhaps, the 97rock slipped because
it came BORING/OLD/SAME ol' SAME ol....and,
P-R-E-D-I-C-T-A-B-L-E-!

The above post...
means, getting by, is gettin old !!!
results, and numbers goto other stations in this fine city.

Perhaps the folks at "Geezer Rock" should have someone tune in another version of a Rock format - that of Oshawa station 94.9 The Rock. Live jocks all day till midnite, knowledgeable staff that enjoys what their doing....and David Marsden on Thursday and Friday nites. While not as unpredictable as the lamented "Spirit of Radio" the music flows well thru the shifts. The good things that can happen when station owners give the staff some freedom to share the music........ :D
