"Bin Laden" Reference In ABC Sitcom Censored

The ABC sitcom "Happy Endings" that aired this week had a soemwhat coincidental reference to the now-deceased terrorist Osama bin Laden.

In the episode, a character laments a mischievous mouse in his friend's apartment, dubbing it his "bin Laden." In fact, the name "bin Laden" was left intact - twice. So what was censored about the scene? ABC silenced the line when the character called the bin Laden-esque mouse "the one that got away."

Meanwhile, apparently Canada was not wary of bin Laden's death, as the scene aired in its entirety this week when "Happy Endings" aired on CityTV.

not censorship so much as a thoroughly ruined punchline

Agreed -- I think they did that because bin Laden didn't get away this time, and the fact in the joke was no longer true. But on the other hand, it ruined the punchline.

This is a small coup for a show that'll likely be canceled by this time next year. Talk about timing! :D

On "Chuck", the night after the announcement Casey had a photo of bin Laden he intended to use for target practice while on a vacation to Vegas with the guys. Casey, for those who don't know, has the kind of training that could have put him on the team that actually killed bin Laden, though he tends to work with Chuck and Sarah.

It wasn't actually Vegas. Chuck's brother-in-law said "Vecas". Whcih is a wilderness better suited for shooting.

According to Wikipedia (no source was given, which violates the rules) Stewie's purchase of plutonium from a Middle Eastern terrorist Sunday night was a reference to bin Laden. By the way, we now know that Stewie created the universe.
