Birach Closes on KOLE
SIMA BIRACH's BIRACH BROADCASTING CORP. closes on the purchase of Talk KOLE-A/PORT ARTHUR, TX from CITYGATE MEDIA for $450,000 cash.

JODY MCCOY of MEDIA SERVICES GROUP represented CITYGATE and JOHN PIERCE of JOHN PIERCE AND CO. represented BIRACH in the deal.

Did they buy KRCM also?

I don't believe KRCM was part of the deal. Isn't KRCM the one they want to move to Shenandoah/The Woodlands?

Yes, it is. Anyone have an update on the progress of the construction permit?

I don't know about the permit, but 1380 is still on the air here in Beaumont. There is a carrier, but nothing is being broadcast on it for a couple of days now.

Maybe Ralph McBride was waiting for the money he got from selling KOLE before he moves KRCM to the Woodlands.

Any idea what Birach wants to do with KOLE now that it's his? $ 450,000 seems pretty high for a 1kw AM on a graveyard frequency and a transmitter in Port Arthur. Does it even reach Beaumont?

With the possible exception of 560 and 1250, no AM radio station in the B-P-O area is "getting out" to its fullest potential. If every AM in that area was technically "up-to-snuff," they would be heard with little, or no, problem all over the place.

It would be interesting to find-out what, if any, stations are operating within licensed parameters and what, if any, stations have, at least, some semblance of a ground system at the base of their tower(s).

Since I heard what I assume was testing at 1380 several weeks back, nothing more has occurred on this end of the move. No signal at 1380 in Shenandoah currently. We'll have to wait and see what happens now.

1250 is still at reduced signaL Their 500ft tower that was supposed to be replaced in 60days has not has anything done since Sept...so much for 60days in the STA....does cover the area though at 250watts at night better than any other station except 560 (better than 990 with its supposive 1KW DA..that's one station that has NO ground system) 560 seems to have more interference on its carrier at night than before...not sure if the Mexicans have turned up the juice (which wouldnt surprise me) or that KLVI is suffering..

1600 is probably at normal specs but 1KW DA-N doesnt cover the area well; especially at night.....never has

990 is just plain garbage...so is 1150 when it WAS on.....1340 covers Beaumont during the day...but sounds like crap....1380 better turn off their xmtr before Steve Lee at the FCC Houston field office makes a surprise visit....(oops! :)

1450s audio is muddy and poor.....1510 sounds brighter and cleaner for some reason...oh well......some people just dont give a flip about AM anymore.....pity

It appears that KRCM turned off their transmitter in Beaumont today.

I noticed that Clear Channel has finally updated the TOH ID for KCOL, and it is much improved. It even drops the "FM" from the ID as well. Lean and mean!

And illegal, too!!!! Since there still is a KCOL(AM) in CO, 92.5 is still legally KCOL-FM and MUST ID as such.......Hello CC? where is your brains?? Boy the possibility of their losing the buyout deal is really messing with them evidently!

I'm hearing them today (3/26) in NW Harris County although there is something beating against the carrier at an uneven rate (could be just stray crud from a computer, etc., though.) Strength seems consistent with recent reception of the station.

They probably aren't far away from launching the new Shenandoah transmitter...simple one tower operation at 250 watts. I suppose any holdup would be with studio construction.

Do you believe the signal was coming from the Shenandoah site, and do you believe that if they were broadcasting regular programming, that it would be easily listenable?

The signal was NOT from the Shenandoah site as it nulled towards B/PA on my portable radio. And the signal level was about what I usually hear from KRCM.

I am about 25 miles from the new site, and even at a meager 250 watts, it will very definitely be a much stronger signal here. Also about 60 degrees counterclockwise from the current signal direction.

Went over to Beaumont today. 1380 was definitely on the air from their regular site and sounded better than their simulcast partner on 1340 (though that's not saying much).

And CW...you're right, 1510 sounds much improved and beats the pants off their simulcast partner on 1450.

1380 continues to simulcast KOLE from their 'tower' in Beaumont, and it sounds much better than KOLE. Birach would be smart to keep 1380 on in Beaumont for better coverage.

Birach doesnt own 1380...only bought 1340....I suspect they may file to move 1340 if they can to midcounty or closer to Beaumont (Of course, Lufkin is in the way as its 1350 in Jasper but their day signal is not a problem and nighttime, ehh less than 50 watts iirc)....1380 is going bye bye...which is stupid with the growth now happening in the BPT area...but then omni on hte north side of Woodlands means they can carry stuff at night KTRH and KBME do but dont cover that well up into Montgomery Co....more of a money maker there..Didnt McBride already sell 1380 anyway??

Was over there (Beaumont) yesterday (Saturday) late afternoon and 1380 was not on the air.

CW, you will be pleased to hear that CC has corrected the top of hour to KCOL FM. You have such influence!
