Birmingham AM

I don't claim to know much about Birmingham radio, as I'm from the Mobile area ... but I was in Bham this past weekend and noticed 1260 and 900 were off the air the entire time. Is this permanent? Last time I was there, WJLD 1400 was simulcast on 104.1; now it's something different. Who is using 104 now?

I noticed WATV was off the air several days ago. They were back on the air this morning, but with a much weaker signal. AM 1260 was off the air for a few days as well, but has since returned...minus the IBOC. :D

The 104.1 translator, officially known as W281AB, is still owned by Richardson Broadcasting, owner of WJLD. 104.1 is now being leased out to Clear Channel and simulcating their WMJJ-HD2 "The Beat".

I think WATV has struggled since a tornado last year took down their "new" tower in Pratt City. Last I heard they were up and running with a temporary longwire setup, so I dunno if that's still the case now or not. 1260 is more of a mystery, but there's a thread discussing dead air on the AM. But that's not unusual, even the FM station at 101.1 has more dead air and computer mess-ups than any station should have.

WATV is broadcasting on a wire, a T type antenna. It will be exactly one year this Friday since their tower was destroyed by a tornado.
However, surprisingly their signal is not so bad using a T-type wire antenna.

WATV is a true treasure, and I agree, the temporary facilities sound good, considering what they are. Let's hope they can get a new tower rebuilt soon. I love this station.

101.1 on the other hand, is owned by inept, unqualified, sell-it-by-the-hour religious egomaniacs. See the ratings in Denver lately? How about Detroit? Overheard at a Crawford transmitter site:

Corporate engineer: "I'd lend you guys a hand... but I'm wearing a suit."

Junior engineer: "That suit has BUTTONS on it, doesn't it?!!!" ::)
