What do you think is going to happen, if anything?

IMO, Cox is continue to be bombarded by CC & Citadel in just about every format. Particularly WZZK, I foresee them to continue to lose it battle with The Bull badly. I wouldn't even be surprise if they don't fall out of the top 10 in the market. KISS & JAMZ will continue to dominate until Citadel get their act together with Hot. New Country station, umm, I guess it going to be just like the urban station Cox has in Atlanta and just continue to sit idle.

CC is going to continue to dominate with The Bull and The Q. However, WENN may have the numbers, but they will still not the revenue to back it up. I wouldn't be surprise if a format change is the cards with this station in '06 for mainly monetary reasons.

Citadel well this is going to be the most interesting one of them all especially with The X and Hot. They have 2 stations that have been considered by many as f***ed up. Hot is losing money and numbers faster than water from leaky plumming because of their undefined target demo. I expect that station to go more after JAMZ in the coming summer with an Urban disguised as a rhythmic format (hint like WPGC DC) because going after KISS primarily ain't working. The X is going to have to make some serious decisions with their format and signal since they having a hell of time rebounding.

I stand by my predictions to the WZZK thread:

WZZK adopts the "new country" format and staff of 97.3 w/ a new morning show
WNCB becomes WAGG-FM w/ black gospel, stomping WENN flat
WAGG-AM picks up the new Radio One black talk network w/ Sharpton, Two Live Stews, etc.
WENN goes active rock, changes calls and imaging to er, something else.
Kenny Wall finds that lost cat and we have Cat Country 100.5, which also ends up beating WZZK. They'll pick up Johnson & Johnson if they can.

Citadel screwed themselves and everybody who loved Alternative Rock on the radio, (especially in northern Alabama) earlier this year with the switchover. I'm predicting that WRAX will flip to country as "Cat Country 100.5" (like clichemoth stated earlier) since that's a safe format to make money and Hot 107.7 will live on, but barely in '06.

But if that happens, where would Coyote J go?

Rock 99, perhaps? A classic metal show would kick ass. Or maybe he goes to the new active rock 105.5.

The X dies and the eagle stops trying to go after ZRR indirectly and flips to Alt, or not. With the X around or not, if it did happen 106.9 would have the advantage of their big signal, which can be heard clearly even in some parts of Huntsville

My predictions are the following:

Jaleo23 gets his mainstream Urban at 105.5 with the current calls of WENN
97.3 switches to Black Gospel with the WAGG calls (Alabama's Gospel Giant)
610 switches over to 50s and 60s Oldies with WGLD calls (Gold 610)
The Alt Rock crowd getting them a new Alt outlet at 106.9 with these calls (WBRA) (Birmingham's Rock Alternative)

P.S. I am already excited about the upcoming year. Moody will soon be signing on with their new station at 89.5 here in Selma and I may soon be able to start up my new Radio station at 94.3 with K-Love being heard over it. I am still waiting for that dream to happen. When it does happen, I will be excited and share it with those reading.

It's funny there is no mention of a station flipping to some form of adult hits since that's the hottest format across the country right now. I think Cox really missed to boat when they flipped to classic hits instead of a Jack type station.

I don't see WRAX flipping to country. The market is way oversaturated right now with three (four if you count the AM) bad country stations. If WRAX flipped to country, Citadel would have to figure something out with their new country station in Tuscaloosa. WRAX has done very well on a much worse signal than 100.5, but they need to get their $h%t together and program it the way it was when it was good. By the way, I don't see anyone in Birmingham picking up Johnson & Johnson. They were terrible with no local connection.

One player to watch is WQEN with its new blowtorch signal. They are already showing upward movement in the trends and that's who Jamz needs to worry about, not HOT. Contrary to what most of you say about HOT, I think they should go more directly after KISS and let the Q manhandle Jamz.

Then there's the WZZK disaster. Cox has completely destroyed a legendary country station. It's sad and pathetic. They don't seem to care either. You can't go anywhere in Birmingham without seeing a Bull billboard. Remember the days when you couldn't go anywhere without seeing a WZZK billboard? I can't listen to WZZK anymore because I get so sick and tired of hearing the same canned liners evertime the jocks come on. Blah, blah, blah. The most country music guranteed? Give me a break. Who cares. Country listeners want a local feel. There's none on WZZK. They can bring it back, but never to the level it was once and it'll take relaunching the station, new imaging, new programming, and a boat load of advertising. Will Cox put that into it? I think not. I could see The Bull having a lineup incling Patti & Bill, Cat West on Middays, and Brother John in afternoons. Wouldn't that be funny?

New Country... not working. Add WZZK and New Country together and they still don't beat the Bull. Do an FM sports talk. Again, it'll cost money though.

I don't see Clear Channel ditching the gospel on WENN. I'm sure they do have trouble leveraging the minority $$ since they're competing with Cox's urban powerhouses. However, if the Q starts eating into Jamz, then that's another story.

Just my two cents worth! Happy Holidays!

You are right about the eagle, they are too much like WZRR, and the people in charge won't market it. An Alternative Rock or Adult Alternative on WBPT would make a huge impact in Birmingham, but since Cox is research driven, WRAX has done such a poor job with the format over the last couple of years, and there is no research available on a triple A, it won't happen with 106.9.

The Q in 2K6...?

Good predictions by everyone, but THIS prediction has some real legs, IMO. No direct format competition, and you have a better metro/suburban signal than your biggest demographic competitor (Jamz).

But what about the morning show? Is anyone really paying attention to "Ace & TJ"? The evil side of me wonders what mayhem might ensue if "Star & Bucwild" took over, with the appropriate music tweaking...
