Birmingham Ratings Trends

Rather an inauspicious debut for WZNN. It looks like their 12+ ratings are no better than the last days of 97.3 the Buck.

On to the rankings:

1. WBHK
2. WBHJ
3. WZZK
4. WDXB
5. WQEN
6. WJOX
7. WUHT
8T. WMJJ
8T. WAGG
10. WBPT
11. WERC
12. WDJC
13. WZRR
14. WQEN-2 (103.1 the Vulcan)
15. WAPI
16. WERC-2 (105.1 Hallelujah)
17. WZNN
18T. WATV
18T. WHPH
20. WMJJ-2
21. WYDE
22. WENN

Why didn't you include WJLD, they better numbers than the following:

15. WAPI
16. WERC-2 (105.1 Hallelujah)
17. WZNN
18T. WATV
18T. WHPH
20. WMJJ-2

There must be some type of conspiracy.

WFMH??? They likely haven't been in the books since 1997 or 98, back when they were on 101.1. Since then, they've been on 95.5, and since 2005 have been in Hackleburg... :D

To make it even stranger, I've had WFMH listed as off-air since the tornadoes in April.

Unless they went and pulled a trick like WYVC in Camden and bought an out of spec transmitter/antenna and are now pumping out megawatts, I think it's an attribution error.

September-October-November trends have been posted. Not a lot of changes at the top, but some shuffling in the middle, Last month's rankings in parentheses:

1. WBHK (1)
2. WBHJ (2)
3. WZZK (3)
4. WJOX (6)
5. WQEN (5)
6. WDXB (4)
7. WUHT (7)
8. WAGG (T8)
9. WERC (11)
10. WMJJ (T8)
11. WBPT (10)
12. WDJC (12)
13. WZRR (13)
14. WQEN-2 (14)
15. WMJJ-2 (21)
16. WAPI (15)
17. WERC-2 (17)
18T. WATV (19T)
18T. WZNN (18, but a lower share than last trend)
20T. WJLD (16)
20T. WHPH (19T)
22. WENN (22)
23. WYDE (21)
24. WFMH (still wondering how they show up)

So----my question is, who is more of an endangered species: WBPT or WZRR?

You or someone asked a question similar to this previously, and I still say a 'Journey' is in Birmingham's future. Could easily be WZRR.

yes, I saw the info about it on the "other radio board". They were reporting that the format change is scheduled for midnight tonight.

I believe that The Vibe will be the third Cumulus-owned CHR in Alabama. So that means to look for a pretty domestic playlist during a.m. drive and office hours. I assume we'll hear Billy Bush weeknights, which frankly I wouldn't mind vs. the weird Kane show that The Q pipes in from Washington. I do wonder about mornings -- apparently Ace & TJ are putting up respectable numbers.

It's not impossible for a Cumulus CHR to take down a heritage (or semi-heritage) station -- look at Q100's rise over Star 94 in Atlanta -- but they'll have their work cut out for them. All the best to everyone over there.

The last song played on Rock 99 was Motley Crue's "Girls, Girls, Girls."

The flip to The Vibe began with a bell tolling over and over again starting around 11:58. The bells continued through 12:01 a.m. -- not sure I've ever heard anything more annoying on the radio.

Call letters still WZRR. They're running a "Kiss FM" jingle package from ReelWorld. Interesting coincidence there as Citadel's last attempt at a pop station in Birmingham ("The New 94-5 FM") also ran a ReelWorld Kiss FM package.

First song was LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem." Of course. Almost sounds like they might be pitching up tracks just a little bit, and I wouldn't be surprised if they do as they move to compete with The Q (and it's something they already do on WZYP).

The first sweeper after Party Rock Anthem announced that they'd be playing "ten thousand songs in a row," presumably going commercial-free for a few days (and the station's first tweet confirms this). Second song was Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away."

It looks like Cox now has the Classic Hits/Rock format sewed up to themselves.

Here's to The Eagle 106.9 FM.

Hope your station will have even greater success.

This might start a debate: did Cox earn their dominance or just happen to have a station in the right place, when WZRR was at its most tired?

I moved out of the big ol' salty Ham years ago, but every time I came back, Rock 99 sounded just like it did 2, 4, 5 years ago. Except for a short period when they were "Buzzard" the station has been straight up classic rock since 1988. I think the only thing new was adding Guns N Roses, which is what drove me away (but I am an old school classic rock fan only, and generally dislike classic rock staples from the 80s.)

The Eagle certainly had better sound quality, a competitive signal and a wider playlist… but whether it earned those numbers it was just exasperation from Rock 99? Who knows.

Star*94 was never really a real CHR. All you had to do, really, was be just a little bit more chr than Star*94 was a chr and you could win by default, especially in a town where there was no other chr or properly programmed hip hop leaning rhythmic.

I've had 106.9 as preset 1 for a few years now, it's better than anything else up here in Huntsville, 99.5 is blocked by a translator, and I've heard 106.9 as far north as Pulaski TN day to day (Franklin TN during some DX) and as far south as Greenville AL. Definitely one of the strongest signals in the whole state. I'm interested to see how they will react to Rock 99 going belly up.
