Birmingham Winter Arbitrons

Just checked these out yesterday. "Kiss" and WZZK are still #1 and 2, respectively, as usual, with "Jamz" rolling slightly behind in 3rd place. Most notable (I thought, anyway) of the ratings was WJOX-FM which has dropped more than 40% in one quarter's time. The "Vibe" continues floundering in their quest to dethrone the "Q". Of course, the usual folks are at the bottom of the barrel; WYDE is still barely hanging onto a thread and is back down again slightly...but then again, there's not much more downward for them to go since their ratings are abysmal. When is Crawford ever going to pull the plug on that talk format and put it out of its misery?? ::) WAPI-FM is still hanging close to the bottom as well and barely pulling more than a 1.0 share. I still believe it would be advantageous for Cumulus to move the talk format off the inferior 100.5 signal and move it to 99.5. WZRR isn't getting anywhere with the CHR format, and it would give WAPI-FM a much better signal over Birmingham to compete with WERC. The WAPI-FM calls could come home too to 99.5 where they left 50 years ago before moving to the 94.5 frequency. It's plausible for it to happen. It's not uncommon these days to see talk FM's with marginal signals being moved to other more powerful FMs in a group's cluster. Just look at Cox's decision today to move Jacksonville FL's WOKV-FM from its class A signal to the now-former WFYV at 104.5, a class C.

I was just discussing this same thing on the other thread about 93.3 in Huntsville. News/talk moving over to a strong signal. Its a growing trend that is working for other companies. The question for WAPI is, if it moves to 99.5 would it really gain more revenue than it is getting on 100.5? Then there's the question of what to do with 100.5 if WAPI leaves. I was toying with the idea of classic country in the Huntsville market. Would it work in Birmingham? Any other good ideas for something that can be profitable on that signal?

If WAPI were to move the talk programming to 99.5 at some point, then 100.5 would probably fare better with some type of niche format, IMO.

I agree. A niche format, like classic country for example among others, would work best with the limited signal. Something that people will put up with a weaker signal to listen to because they can't hear that format anywhere else. I had the same thing in mind when I was toying with the classic country ideas for 92.5 if WVNN were to move to 93.3 in Huntsville.
