Bittner on HD and listeners..

from Tom Taylor's newsletter:

http://somethinglikenothing.net/ttn/ttn-03252013.html

>>“Aw, c’mon, guys – HD Radio does have a future – to feed programming to some FM translators.” That’s New England station owner Bob Bittner, a rugged individualist if there ever was one in radio. He indicates that his quote is said with “sarcasm.” He tells this NOW Newsletter that “Prompted by your article of Pew Research's study of HD, I asked WJTO's listener-callers ‘How important is HD-Radio to you? Very important, somewhat important, or not important? The 15 responses were - 9 said ‘what-radio?’ (So I guess that means ‘not important.’ Four said "It must be good 'cause I like HDTV." And two said – to me, at this standalone non-HD AM station, ‘You are HD, aren’t you?’”

Joe Average can't even get Call Letters and Dial Positions right, you think they'd have any clue on HD Radio?

(I am a regular listener to 97 JIB, BTW......LOL)

It would be, if you could legally feed a translator with it. Several broadcasters asked - and the answer from the FCC has been a consistent "no." The logic is that while HD subchannels are considered part of the "public" FM broadcast (and are subject to all of the FCC's content rules, including EAS and legal ID and obscenity/indecency), FMeXtra is - like analog SCA - considered a "private," non-broadcast service. No FCC content rules apply, and that's considered problematic for translator relay, per Jim Bradshaw at the Commission.
