BizRadio 990 off 12/16

If you knew how much of a joke Biz Radio is you wouldn't be suprised.

I've been following them all along, and I've read all the negative blogosphere stuff. It was on from about 11/28 (advertised 11/26 but never happened) until about 12/15. I guess either a check bounced or the station got a better deal from the religious net. I like biz radio, generally, but it sounds like its streamed via a slow internet connection that breaks up repeatedly. Very annoying the frequency of technical problems. I think they need to treat FW and Dallas as separate markets and go for a low power station in each market. The best setup was on 1360 and I was annoyed when they left, but now would hate to see the struggling rational radio booted (although i read that rumor as well). That has been very annoying also, 1360 to 1110 to 1160 to 990 to oblivion. The programming appeals to me personally much more than any other talk radio station in Dallas (i listen to a few 1360 shows on weekend, but mostly KERA). I really hope they stabilize, but my hopes are fading. (I heard a rumor also of going to KGOL in houston soon).

And on this subject, we need to just scrap the AM band. Why don't we double or triple the FM band and give all those FM stations an FM station assignment. We just have no need for nationwide (clear channel/poor quality) broadcast radio service, especially in this problematic, limited bandwidth, band. It is absolutely ridiculous to maintain this crappy system, to maintain the massive signal characteristic modifications for nighttime service...utterly stupid.

You're right, I checked 990 this morning and heard what sounded like a Black Gospel/Religious/Really Into Christmas format.

In fact, I spent part of the day in Rockwall and killed some time DX'ing around the AM dial (ya know, useless during the day, but kinda wondered what the SCAN button would pick up.) Got KFYN-1420 out of Bonham very clearly, for one. 1110 has definitely made the flip to KVTT. 1160 was a foreign language station. 700 was some really strange foreign language. Radio Disney sounds like it's skewing toddler age now. 870 sounded REALLY bad...much like someone just described BizRadio on 990 with a poor internet connection with lots of dropouts and flutter and such...Audio quality itself was muffled, overmodulated, flat, no treble, and just plain pitiful. I found Limbaugh on 600AM; that used to be KTBB-Tyler but not sure who's there now. And I wasn't able to pick up KLSR-"Lakeshore Radio" 1650, a Part 15 station, near 30 and 205, but have gotten it more clearly near 66 and 205 in the past.

(And yes, speaking of, even at 1360, BizRadio simply broadcasted the internet stream from sister KXYZ in Houston over the DFW airwaves. So anytime the connection went down or ran slow, you heard it firsthand over the air. There was a system in place where some of the Houston spots were "covered up" with Dallas ones, and, of course, the KMNY ID covered the KXYZ one (sometimes. And sometimes you'd hear BOTH at the same time.)

One reason I was surfing was to see what was out there on AM, in hopes that Rational Radio might land elsewhere, if there is indeed a change coming. Landing on another heritage frequency would be especially fun for The Hi-Fi Club (1190, anyone?) I heard a lot of otherwise useless programming scattered all over the AM dial.

ah good old 1190 i loved every format they've had recently The Oldies was a good mix. Classic Country was great! CNN sucks...
And At least 1190 has some presence in The Northern Counties.
As for 700. I would love to buy that freq and put something cool on it. It has pretty good Day and Night Coverage.

The Hi-Fi Club On Hi-Fi 1190 Stereo 8)

BizRadio is back on 990, what are they trying to do here? Confuse us??

'BB is still there. :)

I guess you missed it, Mike. Yes, KTBB is still the same but they killed 92.1 KDOK, which became news/talk KTBB-FM. Soon after that the local Jack station on 99.3 went to talk, too.

Keep AM for wide-area broadcasting & put the small local stations on a new FM. New band could be the old TV channels 2 - 6 since they are only used by a handful of stations (about 40 nationwide) & it is right below the current FM band. Put those few stragglers up on Hi-VHF or UHF & get some use out of that spectrum or at least part of it.

I have been listening to KFCD the past couple of days. It's a black gospel format. I have not heard any spots, but I have noticed that the voice of the station is my man Scott "Dap Sugar" West. Does anyone know who is behind the gospel music format? IS 990 still located in the North Dallas Bank building on 635 and Preston Road.

I'm betting it's the former ABC Radio Network's "Rejoice Musical Soul Food." It kept on going independently (sort of) after being dropped by ABC. This is the same format that was aired over 990 during part of 2008. Don't know if it's some "default" thing, that when the station's not being leased, or during interim times, Rejoice is played. Far as I know, 990's still available for a leasing arrangement. I'd sure like to know what excuse BizRadio used to get out of their lease after just 5 weeks. They either got knocked off 1160 and bought time by-the-week at 990 just to stay on the air until Rational Radio was done at 1360, *or* they signed a contract with 990, then the 1360 position suddenly became available, and Biz cooked up "issues" with 990 in order to break the contract.

As for Scott, I know he *was* working for ABCRN, and also doing mornings at the USA Radio Network/IRN. Sadly, from what I've heard, Rejoice is barely surviving, and the talent is either pro bono or paid little. Shame, as I think it's a pretty decent format (not that I listen, but the CONCEPT is sellable and could be viable, if marketed and programmed correctly...which I don't happen to think putting a "screaming preacher" in a 30-min block, right in the middle of regular music programming, is the way to "program.") I believe some of the original ABCRN people are still running it, or at least on the air there (Marina Brett was one, until she and Bob moved to FL, Keith Solis, and the woman who uses her first/middle/last name...I just can't think of her name...but a longtime stalwart at ABCRN.)

I don't know where 990 is located now. I think the 12900 Preston Rd studio went bye-bye after Dave Schum's second attempt to revive 990. Me, I'd guess it's run on the ABSOLUTE cheap and located in a barn near Farmersville these days (probably more like a trailer at the base of the tower, a la KJZY of old.)

Scott hosts Day Break USA on the IRN/USA radio network. Rejoice is still in business but they moved operations to Virginia I think. I know Keith Solis voicetracks the morning show. I don't think anyone moved with them. When they were Rejoice, they were in that building and that was in late 2008 I believe. The person you are thinking of is Willie Mae McIver. I think she left the company and started a gospel consulting firm.
