BJ Hunter WGBF Evansville Night Jock passes

BJ Hunter as noted on the RI front paged passed away.

BJ (Andy Ashwood) was night jock at WGBF in the good old days when the station was on top with listeners. Sad to note his passing. Smokin Greg was the PD at the time.

I got a call from a friend Thursday morning that Andy was admitted to UCLA Medical Center Wednesday. He had been battling cancer.

Any fond memories of the old Rockford Days across from St Mary's at We Got Big Feet?

That is sad news Chief. When I first heard it, I was hoping it wasn't him. Had a great time working with BJ (who started at GBF going by Bwanna Johnny.) He was one of the last really great jocks we had there.

Uncle Smoke replaced Buddy Scott as pd in '78 and was there until Fall '80. He's been in Chattanooga ever since.

I had no idea that Andrew even had cancer. This is sad news, indeed.

I worked for Andrew at WQAM in Miami. This is a guy who loved life and lived it to the fullest. Always fun to be around. We had some good times when he would practically take the whole station out to dinner and stuff. He really had an appreciation I think for radio as it was back in the day when I first started and long before then.

I was saddened to see this today. RIP.

I had the honor of working closely with Andrew during his time in San Antonio and to do some free-lance jobs for him after his move to FSR. Andrew was truly a great personality and a tremendous force of energy. You could "feel" his energy enter the building. He made and saved many radio careers durning his time.

His signature on all his email and letters was “Dare to be great!”

He was, truly great.

Andrew Ashwood's memorial service

Andrew's memorial service is scheduled for 2:30pm on Friday, November 21st at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles.

I worked with Andy in about 1980-81 at WRKR in Racine, WI (That's where the calls resided then-they're in Kalamzaoo now I think) Anyway, it was one of his first radio jobs. He was the sales manager for WRKR's AM, called then WWEG. It was a tough assignment, but his enthusiasm and energy got the little country daytimer off to a good start. I remember him as arrogant (not a bad thing in our business) and a heck of a softball player. We called him "Young Andrew."

Did this man ever work for WKKR 1330 in Evansville when it first went Country around 1980 or so?
