BJ Shea, gone.

Lately some iHeart classic rock stations have been hiring talent with sports background. They just did it in Boston a few months ago.

The co-host of the city's #1 morning show quit, and now hosts morning at iHeart's classic rocker WZLX. Ratings have gone up a full share since.
Boston, though, is absolutely a sports city. I'm not sure Seattle is the same. I don't live there, but Seahawks fans seem to be bandwagoners, and don't get me started on the Mariners. The basketball team left for Oklahoma.

Great. You know, I think this is one of the traits of a really good producer. Keep the talent happy.--Phil Connors.

It was sad to see him go. After he left it was never the same. Just endless breaks about texting in to win national prizes with the occasional drop of “101.5 KGB” branding lol
What a gong show, if I were PD and I hear the branding of another station on my station, heads would be rolling. I know voice trackers track multiple stations, but come on, at least have a little attention to detail.

I’ve done quite a bit of voice tracking before and can attest to the fact that it’s not as simple as it looks. Trying to come up with material (and keep everything organized) for multiple stations gets tricky. Needless to say, they’ve got a tough (and probably not always enjoyable job to do). Unfortunately, it doesn’t always present well to the audience though if mistakes creep in. I blame the parent company for pinching pennies more than the talent.

The approach iHeart uses with Martha Quinn on their classic hits stations is a lot better. She is national, but they don’t really try to hide it. She takes calls from all over the country and genuinely seems happy to be there doing her show. As of now, KZOK is mainly just promos for national contests and very brief commentary. Certainly a far cry from what KZOK used to be.

And yet it is #2 among all stations in Seattle.

Yes, 6+ numbers but still look at the trend. Can't determine from this the specifics on AM drive and if that would be the area to place blame or even if so there could be other factors beyond the talent's control to account for it. But not good. Also, note KISW doesn't appear to have taken much if any hit. In any case I wish BJ well.

You’re absolutely right. I can definitely see how someone who likes 80’s and 90’s rock will absolutely not find a reason to leave KZOK (even if there are examples of better classic rock radio stations out there). But I do believe there are a lot of listeners out there who may have only stuck around for the morning show. Danny was great at what he did, and they didn’t lose a beat when they brought in BJ. Who really knows what will happen when they have to build the morning show up from scratch.
