BLACK FRIDAY - IBOC COMES AT ROCHESTER

September 19th is when the FCC authorizes nighttime IBOC. Likely WBZ-1030 will come barrelling in, destroying some of WYSL's nighttime coverage. WOR-710 will duke it out with WGN-720 in Chicago and WLW-700-Cincinnati. Should be quite a show!

Bob Savage did it again, so eliquently put it in a Readers Forum letter in Radio World (Sept 12 issue, page 77). saying that the "Titanic maiden voyage of a technical scheme unwanted by anyone other than iBiquity, its captive big-group engineering executives, equipment sales engineers and receiver-geeks".

So true, so true.

This should be a hot topic at the NAB Radio Show later this month.

AM has been suffering from interference attacks from lots of sources lately. Where I live there have been noisy power lines, LED traffic lights and a host of other things that make AM listening more difficult. No one seems to notice or they don't seem to care enough to do anything about it.

AM died when a pioneer radio station with a directional array was turned off and mowed down to make way for a shopping center. The land had become more valuable than the radio station that sat on it!

This seems incredibly unfair to independent AM operators like Mr. Savage and Mr. Bittner...not to mention their loyal listeners. I'm not technically savvy, like many others on this board, but IBOC sounds like another gimmick to save AM. Let's hope for the best.
