"Black Monday" coming?

I don't expect any on-air changes until after WJYE goes All Christmas. Front office changes are possible. I expect that sales, engineering, and production will stay as stable as the flood of outgoing resumes allows.

Again, the first change I expect, will be the loss of local evenings on WYRK. Instead you will most likely hear Lia Knight at night.
(I could be wrong...)

I don't believe they can put Lia on the air at WYRK. The FCC requires a body in the building and Brett would be it. The amount of money lost in the building already because of automation is staggering. For what they would "save" in salary and benefits, would be lost in revenue anytime there was an issue with the automation or satellite feeds. Besides, they have too many live broadcasts etc that need to be covered. Could you use a board op ... maybe, but you still have to pay them and it's not like Brett is breaking the bank over there. Hopefully Regent will focus more on the revolving door that is the sales department and leave the programming alone.

According to reliable sources, Brett puts up some pretty good numbers, so why make changes, especially on a station as consistently successful as WYRK. There are more important areas on which to focus. I really don't think "Black Monday" is likely... Yet.

This is Regent's first "big market" cluster, so the last thing they're apt to do is screw with it to the extent that it's noticeable to the average listener. Sales managers may be shuffled and/or demoted, maybe even sent packing. Some behind the scenes personnel might get additional responsibilities, (aka, "promoted") but the air staff should be secure at least until January because Q1 is usually a soft time for radio and most likely the time for "making adjustments" to the on air staffs. In this case, the big fish have more to worry about than the squid. So if morning drive or an equally critical daypart is under-performing, that's where Regent may look to make changes. I'd say things will remain stable for the remainder of this year.

Then again, it IS radio and anything is possible. We'll get a good idea of what kind of company Regent is by the style and substance of the decisions they make with these properties.

Rumors ARE flying in certain circles. While I don't work in broadcasting, I am in a business that one might say is "allied," to it, and guess what? We just got a resume from a guy who was working for CBS Buffalo--a real dyed-in-the-wool career RADIO guy--indicating something to the effect that he desires to get out of the "frenetic and unrewarding radio business as it has evolved in 2006." I really don't want to splash his name around the board, not only because everyone would recognize it and I could get fired, but also because I've looked at the guy's radio c.v. and I really feel sorry for him. Honestly, he seems to be the kind of chap who actually still knows how to "drop a needle into the groove" in this mouse-click age. This isn't to say that Regent is about to start a downsizing bloodbath, but based on this kind of thing, I'm guessing that some kind of major changes ARE coming, and maybe sooner than we think.

Hedging Your Bets

I don't know what Regent plans to do. I do know that I'd be looking for other options if I was working in the Rand Building.

Please, for the love of Abel's Bagels and the woman who lead the band in those Talking Proud TV commercials, do NOT reveal that poor man's name. It's bad enough that the resumes are flying around the market. As if there's actually some PLACE to go. The whole market is in lock-down mode, people looking over their shoulders and hoping the west coast under-assistant program director doesn't tell them "the coach wants to see you and bring you play book."

Man, I hate it when sh!t like this happens. I love the business, but it's exactly stuff like this that motivated me to GTFO of the business and paint houses with my goofy (but lovable and very talented) relatives. (Plus the fact that my PD had his itchy finger on the trigger after I let a not-so-silent-wet-and-deadly-one slide during a full staff meeting with all the suits present.)

Uncle Osky belches, scratches his package with complete disregard and he smells (stinks, actually) like cabbage and brauts, but he knows how to paint, paper, plaster and estimate a job. It sucks when good on-air, news and production people get thrown under the bus so the idiots who entered into a ridiculous business scheme can maintain their yachts and memberships at the Saturn Club. Some things never change... Oyyy gevalt! Gonif!

BRAUTS? What in the name of RadknowSKI is Uncle Osky doing eating brauts when KIELBASA is available?

Redlinski's is disappointed.

Regent Moving in

Rumor has it that personalities on "other" Buffalo radio stations have already been approaced by Regent and more will be contacted.

Well, you know what they say. MONEY talks...

I'd have to be pretty unhappy, or already in a precarious position, to take the bait from Regent. If I was already familiar with and admired their operation, people, and track record it might make sense. Otherwise, they're a little fish looking to get bigger, and they've got a LOT of overhead with a purchase price of $125M. That seems like a gamble to me.

As I recall Regent was in Salt Lake City, Kansas City, Louisville and some other markets then sold to Jacor back when. They would appear to have a track record in markets larger than Buffalo. Don't know what that might mean other than they're not a stranger to this size market.

Hey, if they're wavin' big bucks maybe they can convince Radknowski to leave the wallboard, mud and turpentine behind and get him back into the air chair. What's your price, Mike?

Very well, Sherlock. Although I have no intent on returning to the Fifth Estate, here's what might compel me to re-consider:

First, I'd need total artistic control, a program director and GM who won't meddle in my artistic endeavors and (like Sandy Beach) a guaranteed no-cut contract. Also, must have parking privileges, because the Rand building parking is said to be at a premium. A personal valet-elevator man (person) and a salon (not saloon, that comes at renewal) trade that provides for weekly facial, manicure and pedicure (much like Stan Roberts and Larry Levite, both of whom have lovely nails and look stunningly youthful), a gas trade (unlike Uncle Osky's "gas trade") and twice weekly lunch trade. Most critically, my family will receive all bids for any interior improvements to the premises which involve drywall and painting. I'll require a weekly supply of Utica Club or Matt's Premium, delivered by Schultz and Dooley from the F.X. Matt brewery, Utica, New York.

All the other items are negotiable, but the beer trade is a deal-breaker.

And regarding Rox's Redlinski post earlier in this thread. Please know that we (at Aunt Sophie's urging) make every effort to keep Uncle Osky away from the kielbasa (and the pierogi) because its consumption tends to produce toxic gases that may violate the Kyoto Accords. And even though the U.S. is not a signator to the accords, we feel it's our duty as a responsible family business to help reduce greenhouse gases and preserve the environment (as well as our nose hairs.)

Uncle Osky, despite his rough hewn exterior, is a true European Renaissance Man. He writes and speaks three languages, Polish, French and German. He's also a noted European author, published in Polish and German, having a certain a Dave Barry-like sense of humor. In the late 70's, he authored the highly regarded bathroom reader, "Mein Stench."

Although it's out of print, it's a classic.

And this has WHAT connection to this board? C'mon Mike, it's a RADIO board, not a freakin' creative writing board... what's next, the return of the poetry lady, maybe "how I spent my summer vacation?" You're better than this. Write about radio and leave the humor essays to Dave Barry.

If today is in fact the day Regent takes over the CBS cluster, there should be some observations. Personally, I don't expect much to change on the air. Behind the scenes, there might be any number of changes. We'll soon find out.

So, what happens if they make "no changes"? The people that are there sink or swim on their own marits?

No Changes?

Hmmmm. You bring up an interesting scenario. The locals wouldn't be able to blame anything on "corporate". They may actually have to make decisions, and take responsibility for them.

Happy Halloween.
