Black people on SNL

Earlier this year a black woman was hired because the show didn't have one, and they really need a black woman in some situations. They've been showing classic episodes in prime time and this past Saturday I think Garrett Morris wore a dress. But that's not always a solution.

One of the writers appeared on "Weekend Update" to rant, and I wondered why they couldn't use her.

Well, Leslie Jones appeared several times in skits along with Noel Wells when Chris Rock was host and they had a big need for black female characters in skits. I thought she was just a writer, but why not keep using her?

I believe they DID make Leslie Jones a cast member this season.

Yes, they did. In fact, SNL has more black cast members now than they ever have before. In order of hiring: Keenan Thompson, Jay Pharaoh, Sasheer Zamata and Leslie Jones. Jones was hired as a writer during the search that eventually ended in the hiring of Zamata, and was made a featured player a couple weeks ago thanks, in part, to her appearances at the Update desk being so popular.

As a Black male, I'm happy to see 5 Black cast members, obviously the most they've ever had. However, funny trumps color. I loved Seinfeld because it was/is funny and didn't mind that there weren't any Black cast members.

Last week they needed black cast members. There was a commercial for a fake sitcom and because there were complaints about the family being all-white, they added black cast members. By the time the commercial was over, they had gone so far in trying to satisfy everyone the show ended up back where it started.

Last week a light-skinned woman played both Beyonce and Kim Kardashian (who is actually white). I don't think she was one of the cast members. Maybe it was Nicki Minaj, but it's unusual for the musical guest to appear in sketches. She was really good.

That was indeed Nicki Minaj. She's played characters in a few sketches each time she's appeared on the show. I believe her first was in "Bride of Blackenstein" a few years back, which was outright hilarious :D

Brilliant!

Jay Pharaoh's Obama got so mad that he became The Hulk. Or rather, Ba-Rock Obama. In the torn shirt, The Rock.

Michelle got mad too. She was Sasheer, but then she also became a female Hulk. Who was Leslie Jones.

I couldn't find this a few weeks ago, but Michael Che has finally appeared in a skit. I think this was a first.

The reason was that host Tracy Morgan was playing "Family Feud", hosted by Steve Harvey, played by Kenan. Jay and the two women were Tracy's family along with Michael. Ironically, they played the game with four members on each team, but Tracy was actaully playing against his family as he had split with his wife and married a white woman. And Tracy's other family members were her family.

Jay Pharaoh does an absolutely perfect Chris Rock.

And his Dr. Carson is hilarious if not accurate.

When Ariana Grande was on, Kenan said people still ask him about Kel after all these years, so once you've been on Nickelodeon, they never forget. And he's been on SNL for HOW many years?

Jay Pharaoh had one of his best skits ever when he talked about the 'Black Comedians Meeting.' Spot-on impersonations Eddie Murphy, Katt Williams, Kevin Hart, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan, Chris Tucker, Hannibal Buress and Bernie Mac.

His Chappelle was quite weak. His Bernie Mac was fair. I've barely heard of Hannibal Burress. I do agree his impressions of Eddie and Chris are flawless! :)

Hannibal Burress is probably best known as the person who finally outed Bill Cosby's rapes by speaking of them publicly. In reality, Cosby's behavior was well known privately, but somewhat under the public radar prior to Buress's brining it up last year.

Burress also has a recurring role on Broad City (Comedy Central) as Ilana's boyfriend and lover.

Garrett Morris was hysterical as Long Dong Silver in the satire of Senate Confirmation hearings of Justice Thomas in 1991.
