I, like you Mr. Fli, tend to think Cumulus is talking out its **** by threatening to hire someone else for that slot.
First goes The Brunch. It seems to be quite a coincidence that both Dwyer and Mullen would cite "busy schedules" at the same time as reasons to stop doing their show. Translation: They were shown the door.
Now goes SportsNight. It was only a matter of time. And, with all due respect Mr. Dickey, you want to launch a new show "by football season?" Football season? That's in September. It's March.
So ends the most fun three years in Nashville radio history, at least from the perspective of people like us who have nothing better to do than debate radio news and rumors.
The Zone is like Mike Tyson in the mid-90s. He wasn't the boxer he could have been, but he certainly looked like the baddest man on the planet because his competition was so poor. The Zone delivered the knockout blow without even trying. We all know what eventually happened to Tyson. He sucked so bad that even lacking competition could beat him. Granted, that won't happen now, but if you guys don't shore up your act, somebody else will give it a shot and beat you.
Now, here is why The Fan will be gone the minute the NCAA Tournament is complete:
Sports stations (especially low-rated ones) make their big money on marquee events. It is much easier to find sponsors for events than it is to find day-in/day-out sponsors for a low-rated talk show, when (for not much more) an advertiser can go to a station with a double-digit share and become one of George Plaster's 32 hourly commercials.
Following the NCAA Tournament, what would be The Fan's next big event? The Indy 500? Even that wouldn't generate much revenue, leaving us with...(drumroll please)...umm...well...nothing. No more events until football season: 5 long months away. And if they want to hold onto the Westwood One rights, they can always get away with sneaking some sports (namely college & NFL football games) back onto WTN on the weekends. Even then, you can make your "event" revenue, and you're not stuck with a dud of a radio station.
They are not looking for an afternoon show. They are looking for a format.
Note to Cumulus: Attack the rock market. Give rock fans a reason to listen to terrestrial radio again (The Buzz certainly isn't giving them a reason). You might not make much money with it, but it certainly will do better than The Fan.
Besides, those folks that left Cromwell need jobs.
