Blatherwatch had some high and low points, the lowest was the trial of Mike Webb and subsequent murder which had the highest web views. It made some enemies too, Mike Webb's sleazy lawyer and other personalities and PD' who didn't take kindly to critique or calling BS.
It was not Talker's, which in my opinion and Micheal's too is a cheerleader for all things wrong in radio, as radio has hit the iceberg and they telegraph all is calm. BW was trying to sound the alarm on the decline in radio programming and occasionally took a no prisoners approach but also threw out a bone or 2 to those owners and PD who were doing something right. We broke a few stories too, but knew the writing was on the wall.
50k watt heritage stations like KIRO and KING (KPTK) and other am'ers that used to be legendary, now broken shells of their former selves were the stuff we hoped would keep going. CBS treated KPTK like the red-headed step child and still will until 1090 or the CBS cluster is sold. The recession has not been kind to radio and it's declining ad revenue, but so has decisions made far off.
Being a lefty blog, we had high hopes for progressive talk in Seattle and elsewhere, and opined on things political in our hood as well. We had hoped for better times for radio in general. Maybe it will re-purpose itself in a re-auctioning by the Federal Candy Commish or just reduces itself to fewer stations--it has lost its way. There were times lately that blogging on radio was just depressing, the medium has changed, change happens so fast these days that it seems to be the new normal to report on another train wreck in personnel or format without a bump in the ratings later on.
If there is a new Blatherwatch, I wish it well. It was entertaining for 8 years.
