Blatherwatch

Since Little Boy Blue raised the question of what happened to Blatherwatch in the KIRO Luke Burbank thread and I didn't want to hijack that thread, I'll ask the question directly.
What happened to Blatherwatch? Nothing active since April, not even a "that's all folks" goodbye.

I e-mailed the website asking if he was retiring and he said yes. When I asked if someone else would pick up and carry the flag he responded that it would be under another banner and website name if someone did.

Sorry to lose an open point of veiw.

Blatherwatch had some high and low points, the lowest was the trial of Mike Webb and subsequent murder which had the highest web views. It made some enemies too, Mike Webb's sleazy lawyer and other personalities and PD' who didn't take kindly to critique or calling BS.

It was not Talker's, which in my opinion and Micheal's too is a cheerleader for all things wrong in radio, as radio has hit the iceberg and they telegraph all is calm. BW was trying to sound the alarm on the decline in radio programming and occasionally took a no prisoners approach but also threw out a bone or 2 to those owners and PD who were doing something right. We broke a few stories too, but knew the writing was on the wall.

50k watt heritage stations like KIRO and KING (KPTK) and other am'ers that used to be legendary, now broken shells of their former selves were the stuff we hoped would keep going. CBS treated KPTK like the red-headed step child and still will until 1090 or the CBS cluster is sold. The recession has not been kind to radio and it's declining ad revenue, but so has decisions made far off.

Being a lefty blog, we had high hopes for progressive talk in Seattle and elsewhere, and opined on things political in our hood as well. We had hoped for better times for radio in general. Maybe it will re-purpose itself in a re-auctioning by the Federal Candy Commish or just reduces itself to fewer stations--it has lost its way. There were times lately that blogging on radio was just depressing, the medium has changed, change happens so fast these days that it seems to be the new normal to report on another train wreck in personnel or format without a bump in the ratings later on.

If there is a new Blatherwatch, I wish it well. It was entertaining for 8 years.

In a way, blogging not much different from radio. It suffers from over-saturation, unless the content is of specific interest to a large enough base to garner an audience. At the same time, some good effort and talent is both exposed and wasted.

I hope you guys find a vehicle that inspires you and brings some satisfaction in the process. I always enjoyed reading (whether or not I agreed) ... and was on the 'skewer' and many times as KVI's web site was getting completely trashed. It was a situation where I had no control (ever heard of "too many chiefs?")!!

Best of luck.

PRAISE THE LORD AND GIVE ME AN AHEM!!! That disgusting blog is going down! That site created more strife and smeared more people in this radio market than you can shake a stick at---and, yes, Michael Hood was a very instrumental force in the decline and death of Mike Webb! May the site go down in flames and Michael Hood rots in hell and boils in the Great Lake of Fire! THANK YA, JESUS!!!!!

Wasn't Hood April Zepada's father? IIRC she sued KOMO after they let her go.

Oh yes and Hood campaigned hard and heavy against KOMO for really nothing. All companies reserve the right to fire anyone for any reason. That's just the nature of the biz. The lawsuit didn't hold up and Hood wasn't even the legitimate father.

I believe something with Geico and the bad publicity in the mainstream press from that seemed to have a bigger impact than Blatherwatch itself.

Although Hood and Webb had their own personal war, Mike Webb was destroyed far more personally from losing his KIRO job, his reputation, most of his friends in radio, the KIRO income and having to live off an EBT card. And realizing his almost lifelong radio career may have been completely ruined, he fell so far down the spiral to where he was letting some tweeker live with him. Who took advantage of and murdered Mike Webb. Not Michael Hood.

Not saying Michael Hood was any help. Showing up at all Webb's trial dates to get photos and details of a broken man is low, base and something I wouldn't even do to my worst enemy.

All I can blame Michael Hood for was rubbing salt where it wasn't needed. There were bigger things at work in Mike Webb's life at that time than just Blatherwatch.
