b'lo stations in t-dot survey

Funny how Flow 93.5 was originally intended to be Toronto's version of WBLK, but instead they ended up being an urban hits station with a little Madonna thrown in.

What a mess. There are many in Toronto who wish that Flow would just go away and the 93.7 signal would once again fire up loud and clear in Toronto.

This is nothing but a political joke on the part of the CRTC. For years, ever since I was a kid growing up in Toronto, WBLK was a cultual icon in Toronto. However, in recent years, the powers that be went a bit overboard and began licencing different types of radio stations (I don't really know how profitable they are) And it a lot of cases, they are designed to block the Buffalo FM's

What is really questionable is I can't pick up WBUF to the west of St.Catharines because the CRTC in it's great wisdom licenced a radio station on 92.9FM outside Hamilton. I wonder if that is really allowed because it must be less then fifty miles.

In any event, I really don't listen to the radio when I am in Toronto anymore. I just hook my ipod into my Kaboom box and say the hell with the CRTC.

I always wonder what people and the CRTC would react if they ever licenced a Buffalo radio station on 102.1FM blocking out CFNY from not only Buffalo, but everything east of Hamilton. Maybe then they would learn there lesson.

WJCA out of Albion is licensed to 102.1 fm. Does that count?

I'm going to say yes, but remember, the rules have changed. (I think it was late 90's?)

The newer rules allow for a station in Canada to launch on a frequency identical to, or similar to the American station's frequency as long as it does not touch American soil, and vice versa.

Add in the whole "Nobody's gonna drive all the way out to (place market here) to do their shopping." debate, along with the "shortage" of space on the FM dial, and you've got a possible explanation for why all this may be going on.

And as soon as the new Canadian station goes on the air, they ask the CRTC for more power to overcome "severe technical interference" from a cross border station that's been on the same frequency or same first adjacent frequency for decades.

Case in point; CIWV (94.7) in Hamilton. They have asked for two power increases that I can recall. I'm sure this is to overcome splatter from the powerhouse signal of WNED-FM on 94.5.

While I like the smooth jazz format, and I am grateful to CIWV for keeping it alive when so many stations are dumping it, that station never should have been licensed. At least, not on 94.7.

A very true point.
How Ironic is it that Wave 94.7 is currently owned by the same people who own 94.9FM in Oshawa (currently known as "The Rock", maintaining a rock format)
A boost in signal also causes listeners in the Toronto area to pick up *both* stations at the same time, causing an unwanted overlap.

( ??? unless they want to decrease 94.9's signal...?)
