BLOCK looking at radio in Pitt?

I heard from a reliable person that BLOCK might look at jumping into the radio biz. Rumor was they wanted stations in places like Louisville and Pittsburgh. Maybe a couple FM sticks in Toledo.

CBS has said if they divest they would dump WZPT and WDSY. Would that be the optimal stations for Block to pair up with the Gazzete?

Sometime last year CBS stated (in one of their PR releases for shareholders) that they wanted to “concentrate” on bigger markets. I have heard some rumors about some of CBS’s otther smaller market stations for sale. But they are just unconfirmed rumors and even these rumors do not include Pittsburgh stations. CBS does have a good positive cash flow in Pittsburgh and it would be dumb to sell any properties at this time. If they had to divest, I predict they would go the trust route like CC and Cumulus. As a company CBS is OK with their cash flow so there is not reason to sell right now. In fact I feel CBS might be in the acquiring mode soon, picking up some stations in top twenty markets where they are not at the limit number of station wise. Now "trading" stations is another matter and smaller market stations could be swapped for larger market stations.

CBS wants to sell markets like Orlando.

It would not make sense for them to dump half of their cluster here and just keep KDKA and The Fan.

Renda with only one FM and his AMs, combined either with Steel City of Keymarket's properties, could be an interesting target.

CBS would be stupid to sell WDSY. Great sellable demo's (I have sold country and made good money and I am not that great of a salesperson), good ratings, not as expensive to staff as a News Talk operation. This station should have a positive cash flow with just the agency stuff and answering the sales phone line and Fax, not counting the local sales people beating the streets. WDSY should be compared to WUBE Cincinnati which is a very valuble radio property.

having lived in Toledo, I'm not sure that this town is ready for a
radio station as exciting as the Toledo Blade :D

How close to reality did either KQV-TV or WJAS-TV come when the competition for channels 4 and 11 was occurring?

To make a (very) long story short, both channels 4 and 11 were in hearings for years. Ultimately, WWSW and
WJAS merged their applications for channel 11 to get the permit, and WCAE and KQV merged their applications
for channel 4 for the same reason. The owners of KQV then sold their radio statons to ABC (and how different
the city would have been if they hadn't!). WIIC-TV took to the air on September 1, 1957. WTAE-TV made its
debut on September 14, 1958.
