Is there a set formula for pricing of block programming. Such as Hourly religious programming. I am mainly interested in small market stations. I have seen some rates for small stations on graveyard channels, Class C AM's, @ $300 per hour. But most are around $60 per Hr.
Sorry to be so vague, but it depends. You might also be conscious of what the competitors do.
Stations that WANT that stuff are reasonably priced, stations that don't are high.
Many stations "auction" the time. Interested partys show up at a
set time and BID. Nearly every Chicago brokered station does this, as do many other larger markets.
The rate can also be negotiated for length of contract (annual discount), pre-payment, weekly payment, is the station on full power when the program airs? 6-7am may be $150, 7-8am may be $300. Lots of wiggle room.
Just call any talk station in any market. Use radio-locator to find the stations. Most talk stations, as well as some nostaglia and other formats, and a few sports stations, sell time.
Your question on rates has almost as many answers as there are stations. Every station is there to generate enough money to pay the bills and hopefully have a bit extra at the end of the day. The monthly operating cost of a station is a big key. There is generally lots of play in the quotes you get. Money talks, so the more you can pay upfront says a whole lot.
Our trick is to match the programmer's budget with what we need to get for a certain period of time. If the station really cares, they will work to find a rate where you can succeed while obtaining enough cash for the station.
I've head of overnight hours as low as $15 an hour if the station would be manned. I've heard of $70,000 a month for 60 hours a week. This was in the same market...different stations.
