BLOODBATH AT 590 - JOE PARISI "I MIGHT BE NEXT"

Heard it on 590: Dr. Joe Parisi, the Saturday afternoon host, discussing the rash of firings at Pamal, quipped to a caller "I might be next!"

And where is Rich Vassi? G-O-N-E! But watch, he'll come crawling back!

And who among the "family" is headed to Clear Channel? Somebody was seen in the building!

Johnny knows!

It is the whole Corporation with owns WROW that is in trouble. Not Just Pamal. All of Morrell's holdings are in the dumper. Morrell who also owns car dealerships sold his Amsterdam operation to Billy "Huge" Fuccillo. I understand another one of his dealerships was closed.

Uh-huh! Better to sell and get out, although Morrell could wait until the Chrysler electrics come out in late 2009.

By the way, as I said: Rich Vassi is already re-instituted and should be back at Pamal next weekend! This weekend poor Tom Riggoti had an awful time reciting his live newscasts thru NexGen. He's not real happy about his new 6-day a week schedule! How long before that WROW "News Department" becomes a department of one?

Actually Knickman, it's the entire industry. Many of the companies have lost so much value that they are now trading as penny stocks. Morrell was somewhat insulated for a couple of reasons; that market is a decade or better behind much of the country in terms of technology. What is common place elsewhere is novel there so obsolete platforms like analog radio and TV simply die slower. The second reason is that the massive out-flow of desirable demographics has left behind the less desirable demographics. They are less likely to have the income to avail themselves of new technology, even if they were so inclined. The fact is that they are not, they grew old with radio and will out live it but for the time being will not abandon it.

Morrell also had the car business and hotel to cover the broadcast decline but the twin chickens of very poor location (would YOU brave a torn up Central Avenue, risk getting shot or assaulted to buy a disposable imported or domestic car?) and of nepotism are coming home to roost, and the current larger business environment has got to be killing them as well.

But it is not just the business environment. His various corporations seem to exist for the sole purpose of providing a place for his family to be placed in jobs, from what I gather many of them are ill-suited to those jobs. Just look at the web sites his kid "designs" for him, they look like they are straight out of a mid-1990's template designed to accomodate an AOL 14,400 dial up connection. A world wide economic crash is no time for incompetent management but that is exactly what is happening on Johnson Road.

Morrell micro-manages the building. He took over the job of market manager when the real one left, I am told that he has personally ordered additions and deletions to play lists on at least one of the FM's based on his like or dislike of a particular song. Vandenburg took Morrell's pants off before Jimmy even felt a draft and then Jimmy drove a talented young program director out the door. Sales people emerge from his "pep talks" absolutely crestfallen from (as relayed to me) being blamed for the decline in his broadcast revenue. Worse, I have personal experience with him and do not consider him to be an honorable man, in my personal opinion. I would use the word "snake" but PETA would be upset with me for offending reptiles. But, believe me, it is a snake pit inside that building.

Now Jimmy boy is engaging in the same scorched earth policies as the big owners and shedding the only true value the properties have, their people; and is squandering the stations' brands. I do not make predictions and do wish the staff well, however a boob, in a dying industry, in an international economic crash has very little chance of survival. And ain't nothing the poor stiffs working for him can do about that.

Terrestrial radio and terrestrial television have been over for a while now, somebody get the lights.

Let's try and break this down for you folks. Morell has closed a total of 3 local dealerships. The first was in Amsterdam called Amsterdam Chrysler Jeep, The Second in Troy called Advantage Chrysler, and the third in Latham called Advantage Dodge. They all have something in commen. THE CHRYSLER PRODUCT!. A non Morrell company Metro Dodge has also closed. As sad as it is Chrysler is way behind in product and quality. That being said Morrell had some of the worst management in place to run these dealerships. Easy said... a no quality product with poor management is the reason his dealerships have gone down the drain. I would bet that all of the dealerships but Suzuki are on the cutting block. Get out why the getting is good bossman. As far as the hotel business... the man is first a real estate guy. In this economy the hotel and real estate business should be put on hold for a bit. This is another bit of poor judgement made buy the big bossman. Nowon to the ABC cluster of radio stations. The problem with radio goes like this...The old school management way of doing things is a thing of the past. Local radio has become lazy. I'll use Clear Channel as an example...When is the last time John Cooper has done anything with PYX. Changing the morning show personalities every now and then is not going to cut it. Clear Channel has become lazy. Then we have Regent...When is the last time WGNA has done anything to freshen the sound of the station. LAZY is a good word for what radio has become. ABC also wants the same results after doing the same thing day after day, week after week, and month after month. If the current upper management continues to make poor decisions on a daily basis, it is time to cut the cord. Clean house and find a firecracker to light that place up. If the big bossman doesn't do this i'm afraid his radio stations will be saying so long as well.

MT1, you are very insightful, and your post is right on the money.

As for the money, Morrelll couldn't sell cars if they were Hyundais. It's not the car dealerships' brand of cars or the radio station's choice of music or brand of talk that makes it successful. It's the MARKETING TECHNIQUE that makes it work. That's why Paul Vandenburgh is "at the train station at 2 with Bob Mason" and that's how WGNA climbed to #1 - they're "people-friendly" stations. Some old folks still think WGY is, because they remember the great WGY of the past.

Here's a bet for ya: when those People Meters hit the Alb-Sch-Troy market, WGNA will continue to be #1. Don't be shocked if Talk1300 is #2 or #3, with WGY right up there as well. As for Morrell, let him keep tinkering with the music. And the talk. Soon the whole cluster will be at the bottom of the heap.
