Bloodbath at Atlantic

I agree with Jukebox Zero and Who Cares. I think it sucks to see everyone involved, not collecting a paycheck, for no fault of their own. I've never had any connection to Atlantic, nor have I ever worked in South Jersey radio (the closest I came is Trenton...). I've always found S. Jersey radio interesting...something I enjoyed listening to on my vacations in Ocean City.

With that being said - I think that the radio business needs the smaller guy...the mom and pop ownership. I think that may be the only thing that keeps a market like Atlantic City afloat. But to have someone like Nightshady, potentially in control of some radio stations...bad idea. His business plan is so far from smart or brilliant. I only see it as vindictive. When you take away all the fancy talk about what his plans are, it's broken down to him saying 'I'm going to take the last bastion of anything local, anything rock, anything that has to do with what Atlantic City needs for a local flavor, and throw it in the ocean. Then I'm going to bring in as many cost cutting moves for the cluster I now own - eliminating local sales, firing all air staff and replacing them with trackers at a premium, eliminating any management and then laughing all the way to the bank...'

It makes me wonder if this guy's business philosophy with radio is the same as his philosophy for his web design business - you know - get rich quick...

Yeah, I see your point, but let's face it, South Jersey is largely tourism-heavy anyway, and local flavor really is more of a want than a need.

If, and I say this to you, *IF* they come into ownership, I see it going down faster than the Titanic. Once you get rid of the people that made the stations what they are, and once you automate everything, the death warrant is pretty much signed.

sjproducerguy - Yes, this a tourist market, however while the business revenue for the advertisers comes mainly during the summer, the book with which they decide to buy their advertising comes during the deadest time (Winter - the Spring book numbers don't come out until too late into the summer).

So, you have to please the locals in this market or you'll have no numbers with which to pitch sales.

And, go back and read all his blogs - it's chest pumping and vindictive. If the dude can pull it off and own a station, more power to him, but like you said he'll sink like a stone. Likely he can't do what he's claiming he can do, and is just being a jerk with his own blog. He's probably reading all of this and getting excited (I would've said something else but want this post to stay up).

Well, I can't argue with you there. If he does get control, then it'll be amusing, except for the employees he axes. Then again, Atlantic COULD emerge from this, rendering this whole thing moot. Stranger things have happened.

The sad part is that some of the largest radio broadcasting companies in this country are now, have recently been in or are about to go to bankruptcy court. A sad comment on the state of the business. Some here seem to find amusement or pleasure in seeing this cluster go down the drain, but these stations all had employees who now are without a paycheck.

I don't think anyone's happy these stations went down the drain. Everyone who has commented has either expressed feelings for those who lost their jobs, or has been someone who lost their job.

The amusement, or pleasure, if you will seems to be aimed at those who were in charge, some who were simply inept, and some who were allegedly stealing and defrauding the company and advertisers.

Well Who Cares, you have just described the majority of radio company management in this country!

Just to keep everyone up to date on all the threads involving Atlantic. sjproducerguy was found to be, and later admitted, Mike Crook from Nightshade. [email protected]

The same guy is also launching his euro-dance formaatted station......online that is. From which it is stated on his blog. Club97 Radio will launch this Saturday.

Here's news for all of you dancing queens waiting for the return of the mother ship to South Jersey...I remember Boss 97...and it sucked. It wasn't profitable long-term either or it would still be around. And no new dance station is going to light up this market either. It's been tried several times and failed. The market for a dance station is very small...about as big as you 4 bozos who keep talking about how great it would be!

Wild 102.7, Z88.9

From today's Inside Radio:

Atlantic Broadcasting to be liquidated. Following its Chapter 11 filing last month, Atlantic Broadcasting will be sold. The bankruptcy court has hired Media Services Group to sell its five Atlantic City, NJ stations, as well as two tower sites and other property. Court documents show Atlantic defaulted on a 2008 loan with $6.3 million left on the note held by Sun National Bank. A number of partners are involved in the company, with the Long Island, NY-based Northwood Ventures holding a controlling 75% stake in the company. Atlantic Broadcasting has already lined up financing from Sun National to operate while it works its way through Chapter 11.

Look for Alternative to hit the airwaves in late Spring...

the return of 102.7 WJSE is going to happen :)

That decision is up to the new owners who will purchase these stations. If alternative is really that much of a void, then why isn't ZXL jumping the gun on it if they still continue to get beaten by The Shark? At least Kiss-FM has slightly picked up Wild's sound by adding a few dance here and there.

Nobody is a "bozo" for talking about a format you are truly passionate and respect about.  8)

Oh, and here is the link for Club 97 Radio. http://www.club97radio.com/
