first time poster, long time surfer...

I am surprised there is nothing on here about the mass firing over at qantum...Larry Egan, Bill Lowell, and Shelly Stewart were all let go last thursday morn in one fell swoop. any insight? it sounds like they are sweeping the floors to get ready for a new format...i was listening yesterday and I heard a new liner like "it doesnt have to be old to be a cool classic" into something like ben harper or jack johnson...think they are goin after frank?

this has the be the first time in cape radio that there has been such a firing of 3 full time personalities in one day, no?

there were mass firings over at Boch ... including the entire management team ... like 6 years back. That was when they decided to drop the short lived "80s and more" format on 101.1 and alternative 93.5, opting instead to simulcast the stations as oldies with "The Wave." Also, that was when they changed WCOD to Hot AC - which turned out to be a very smart decision ratings-wise.

I am sure there have been other examples of mass firings in the past... how about Cape 104?

I always liked listening to Cool 102 at the beach ... it was great to kick back to.

Come on, You're killing me.Not at Cool. That has had to be the most respected station on this board.

No ones safe anymore...........

I'm surprised!

They've been using that "doesn't have to be old..." for a while now. I'm sorry to see this happen with the exits. I guess you'd expect the PD to be one of the ones to leave, but I don't see where Shelly Stewart would have any kind of negative effect on anything & I thought Bill Lowell was an institution on The Cape.

Musically, the station has changed. I wouldn't mind them dumping the newer stuff & going back to what they were & neither would I mind taking it a few steps further & becoming more of a WBOS type triple-A, but they seem to have tweaked things then stopped short & not taken the format to any one conclusion. They've added a limited number of currents & a good deal of 1990s music & have probably stopped playing or decreased rotation on some of the older songs they used to play...but it's almost as if they've started making some changes but never finished. Other classic rockers may play new Petty, Mellencamp, Clapton, etc, but are not playing Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, or John Mayer like Cool is. I still love the station, but they have to go one way or the other & finish what they've started. I just wish they could do it without any bloodbaths.

And please, I hear Bittersweet Symphony so often that I was tempted to buy The Verve's CD, smash it, & mail the pieces to the station. I like the song & maybe it's the luck of the draw when I tune in, but I hear it constantly.

Bloodbath? some employees got fired....yeah, it sucks, and everyone reading this has probably felt that sting once or twice, but a bloodbath? Is changing out your daily line-up an indication of terrible things happening internally? in this case, I doubt it. you've all shared your expertise in this business quite accurately with your assessments of how Cool has made changes over the past few months, so the experienced one would say that those fired should have seen it coming a while back. A stations moving in a new direction musically often means changing personel, to separate itself from its past, for better or worse. It's not personal, it's business. A cold business sometimes, yes, but we all know this already.

I do think, however, it's extremely hilarious that all the Qantum bashers have yet to post their comments about this new development - probably because they're all rushing to the PO to send out their demos and resumes to McVie!! LOL!!

and yes, PLEASE KILL THAT VERVE SONG!!!!

Can I chime in here for a second. I actually like the station the way it is now. It's a good format. As a matter of fact it's the only FM station I've reguarly listened to lately while at home. I must be about 70 miles from the transmitter but the signal booms into my house. They've got nice power.

... they could always mix it up and play Moby's Bittersweet Symphony remix?

Hey, does anyone know where Jim Riley ever ended up from Cool? I know he had to go back to the Midwest ... but did he end up staying out there? He was always a real nice guy.

You gotta be f**kin kidding me!!!

A 50,000 watt heritage radio station, firmly entrenched in the market place for years, gets competition from a little 4,000 stick, and what does the 50,000 watt heritage station do??? Does the OM and PD of the 50,000 watt station get together to devise a competent, pro-active action plan to fend-off said direct competitor? Does the OM inform the troops that FRANK's novelty will wear-off just like it did in all the other markets, that COOL 102 has heritage and live jocks that can execute live promotions and contests on-air, that we believe in the format and the station and if we up our game and ride it out COOL 102 wil be just fine? No...in their typical radio-incompetence style, what do the brilliant radio-minds of Qenutum do instead????? They drop down in a fetal position, frantically wave a white flag, and beg the 4,0000 watt station to "please stop beating us up! We concede! You win! We'll leave town with our tails between our legs!!!"

All in less than 6 months!!!!!!

Unbelievable.

What kind of message does this send to the rest of the Qaunetum/Cape Cod staffs??

I can almost see the memo now...

"ATTENTION Qintenum/Cape Cod Employees....
from now on whenever a rival radio company turns on a direct competitor to one of our formats, the GM and OM of this company will sit back and do nothing for 6 months except to watch all of our listeners go to our direct competitor. After 6 months of doing nothing we will then blame everyone else for our incompetence and fire the air-staff of our station and then kill the format. Except on WCOD. The air-staff will still be terminated, but not the PD...because even though the PD is a radio-moron, he is a friend of the OM...and the OM already looks bad for hiring a friend instead of a competent PD, and since the OM will look like an even bigger moron if he fires said friend, the PD will be safe. Otherwise, everyone else will be the scapegoat. Thank you for your efforts and have a nice day!"

We already know all the excuses the OM is telling corporate....

"It's not my fault...it's FRANK-FM's fault...."
"It's not my fault...it's the PD of COOL 102's fault...."
"it's not my fault...we threw a bunch of songs against the wall but none of them stuck. It's the wall's fault..."

The Nassau GM must be laughing his head off. He finally knows what many other competent radio-people on Cape Cod have known for a long time....
the upper-management of Qinitum DO NOT KNOW HOW TO WIN...AND THEY'RE NOT WILLING TO DO THE THINGS THAT WILL MAKE THEM WINNERS. They would rather run away than put up a fight.

Are you paying attention, Sandab? Turn-on an FM News/Talk format, a Hot AC format, or a CHR format, and you'll run Quantenum out of the market in 6 months!!!

And to think only 2 years ago Qaantm was hailing their COOL 102 format as the crown jewel in their radio "empire"...cookie-cutting the format to their other markets...and in less than a year their crown jewel format is dead on Cape Cod.

If "telling-it-like-it-is" is "Qeuatim bashing", then so be it. Also, why on earth would anyone with half a radio brain ever want to apply for a job in THAT radio company?? Actions speak louder than words, my friends.

Sorry CurlyShempCurlyShemp, I am just a journalist who enjoys his sensationalist, fear-mongering headlines, thats all. ;D

Per Allaccess they're looking for a new morning person but it says Shelly Stuart and Bill Lowell are victims of budget cuts so it's not a matter of people associated with the format that have to go. Middays will be done (probably tracked) by Jen Arra who does nights on The Rose as Shannon.

Uhhhh....you got the wrong guy. Once again, 3 people (that I know of) post under the "juice" moniker...2 are out of market and I'm in your market. I wouldn't classify it as a "rant"...it's more like telling-it-like-it-is. I know, I know....sometimes the truth hurts.
