Bloomberg 1200 format change soon

Stations on the same band (AMs or FMs) can't suimulcast more than 25% of the time if their signals have significant overlap in the primary service areas of each other. If two AMs or two FMs simulcast, but they cover very separate areas of a market, even if there is some fringe overlap, they are legal.

David,

Thank you. Yours was a crystal clear explanation.

1200 was having all kinds of trouble Friday evening, with their audio going silent for extended periods and repeating sections once it came back.

Interesting, because I listen to The True Oldies Channel on the iHeart app, and they were doing the exact same thing today. Kinda weird when the music would speed up or slow down.

Sounds like a more pervasive iHeart issue to me.

No, David, you're paranoid.
WXKS AM went from Bloomberg to Righty talk

Not paranoid, just too many years associating the WXKS calls with 1430!

Exhibit A: The way the "She's BaaaaaK!" thread was handled.

You are confusing an honest mistake* (remebering WXKS as being on 1430 and not remembering the calls had flipped with 1200) and a matter of board policy regarding ad hominems that do not have a link to a published verification.

* For which an apology was posted.

No, David, you're paranoid.

I think, after Cap-n-Spackles misinterpretation, that a follow up is needed. I do this in the hopes of shining some light on a sensitive subject.

One is not paranoid if they find potential discrimination or racism in a remark that turns out to be, in 99% of the cases, as just that.

If you are not Hispanic, Black, Asian or a member of another minority group I did not name, you are perhaps not as sensitive to comments that smack of bias. On occasion, a wrong conclusion is reached by those who are in one of those groups. But, still, most times it's just the ugly truth.

If you or your wife or children have been asked for their green card even if they were born in the USA, been told off for speaking another language in a supermarket checkout line or scolded for speaking in their native language at school recess or asked if they were becoming accustomed to wearing shoes, you have a different state of awareness. And it's good to make those who don't have that awareness conscious of how others are often treated.

Paranoia is the belief that "they are after you" when that's not the case. When you have lived with people biased against you on a daily basis, it's not paranoia, it's reality.

I mentioned, in a thread in which a video of Jen Brien talking about her problem was posted, that she was to be commended for dealing with said problem, and my post got memoryholed (like this one will probably be) and I was accused of making accusations without evidence despite the evidence being in the thread already.

Off topic, but David is right. I'm White. One of my Hispanic friends told me that at his work certain customers have said to him "I can't wait for you to get deported." My friend was born at New Britain General Hospital in New Britain, Connecticut. His parents were born in PR. And the same for two of my gay friends. One is married. The other is single. Both told me harassment has gotten a lot worse in the last 16 months and they now fear for their lives.

I get your point, but I view it differently from the perspective of liability and the fact that you rephrased the link to some extent. It's now water under the dam, but can be a clarification of what is inappropriate on this board.

Pointing to a link without redefining or exaggerating the content is fine. "Personalizing" the comments about the link, particularly when terms are substituted, will often cause a post to be deleted or edited. And in that case, we are dealing with perspectives and the decisions will not always be what you desired; this is, after all, a moderated site.

where are the Moderators?

Isn't this topic going way off the rails?

It's close, but I have left it so far as it illustrates board policy insofar as post deletion is concerned and clarifies perspectives in the area of insuring that we all respect opinions from differing groups of our society and our board users.

If this goes to far into the realm of "Oscar speeches" Frank or I will close it.

Getting back to radio, in decades working in the Spanish language or Hispanic targeted segment of US radio (1970 to present in Puerto Rico, Miami, LA with the last 25 years dealing with a national group) I get loads of comments and thinly veiled insults for what I do.

Statement: If you keep on doing what you are doing, those people will never learn English.

Fact: Non-English media in this country predates the Declaration of Independence. Media in immigrant's native tongue actually sustain the first generation immigrant and help them adapt. The vast majority of first generation immigrants never learn more than basic English, while their kiids generally are fully bilingual. Learning a language post-puberty is hard, and becomes harder for even a young adult.

Statement: You encourage division and don't help assimilation.

Fact: For those who don't know English, media in "their" language helps understand the "new" country.

Statement: If you play that awful music (referring to anything from salsa to banda to cumbia), they won't learn to like "our" music.

Fact: Music taste is formed, mostly, in early adolescence. I grew up on pop ballads, cumbias and pasillos. Listening to a Classic Rock station is as close to torture as I've ever known. I will never "learn to like" what to me is "awful music" (I am exaggerating to show a point... )

So if I get comments like these (and far worse... just basic ethnic slurs) because I work with Spanish language radio stations... just imagine what persons who are members of certain groups go through in their lives.

Before criticizing a format because we personally don't like it, let's consider that there may be many with different opinions.

1200 having issues all day......airing the news and a spot at the same time.

You are correct; I heard it, too, during Rush's show.

You would think that, since this is not the first time 1200 AM has had syndicated talk, they'd have it down to a science by now, but - no. Heck, things were running well on Talk 1430 before last week's switch.

"iHeart happens."

1200 has mastered the art of jamming in their spots while the show hosts are in mid-sentence. It's just like 1260 used to be.

And we're off to another "same crap different day"......1200 airing yesterday's news and weather and now there's just a loud humming noise....the humming noise seems to happen every nite as well, not sure what that's all about.

Multiple times this week I've heard them cut into the program before the top of the hour while the host was still speaking to play one of their repetitious I Heart pop culture spots, and then go to silence/humming noise for around a minute before joining the top of the hour news already in progress.
