Great month for Hot AC! MIX is #1, I think that STAR has made them a better station because they seem to be more focused and hit oriented than they have been in a long time. Speaking of STAR, this is their second big month in a row, I think it's for real, I hear them all over town, especially in business's.

JACK had their best month in ages and that was before the KKLZ format flip which should help KKJJ even more. Speaking of KKLZ, their final two months of classic rock were their best in ages..they beat KXPT in both March and April before flipping formats, isn't that the way it always works? Good numbers come back after changes are made.

It was Lotus that ended up having the blue Monday as both KOMP and the POINT had surprisingly bad months. I would expect them both to rebound, especially considering the KKLZ format change. I still do think however that for every former KKLZ listener becoming an exclusive POINT listener there will be a POINT listener who finds the new KKLZ and loves it.

Something that really jumped out at me is that two stations that normally do great month after month had horrible April's....HOT and LA NUEVA. HOT might have been hurt by PARTY who had a good month, Andy Gill in PM drive had an especially strong April.

LA PRECIOSA was the top Spanish language station for the month. This reminds me of Dallas-Fort Worth where PRECIOSA also beat the Univision stations in April.

My thoughts on the country race. KWNR shifted to a far more music intensive approach in April. COYOTE always has been a music machine. So now you have two similar sounding stations. Both play a ton of music, the main difference is that KCYE's sweepers are more in your face. Being so similar works to the advantage of KWNR because they are the heritage station.

A couple more thoughts about the trend... If you look at the 3 month rolling average (FEB-MAR-APR) there is unprecedented fragmentation in 25-54. Very few haves and have-nots and a whole bunch of stations in the middle.

There is KMXB at #1 followed by LA NUEVA at #2 coming off one of their worst months ever. Then you have 14 stations that are seperated by just two shares. Consider this statistic, there is a slightly greater difference in share between the #1 station (MIX) and the #3 station (SUNNY) than there is between #3 and #16 (the POINT)! Just about every FM station in Las Vegas is somehwere in the 3s or 4s. It's so close that any station that has an especially good or bad month next trend could move up or down 5, maybe even 10 rank positions.

Our retired friend Vegasradio was wrong on his April predictions. But I do have to give him credit on previous predictions he made about KVEG. He often times mentioned that Mike P was an integral part of the station and they would go downhill without him. Well, it took a couple of months but HOT did have their worst month in years and mornings did take the sharpest drop. Of course it could be a fluke, every station get's dealt fluke high or low months (maybe this won't happen as much with PPM?). We will see next month if HOT is still hot or not.
