"Blue on Blue" by Bobby Vinton

The only version I ever heard until recently was the one from 1963. KTUC hasn't played this one when I was listening.

What they have played, which the "last songs played" says was by Bobby Vinton, is a terrible AC version. It could be him singing, but I can't find any information about such a version. I don't see what the point would be since the station plays less AC than almost any other standards station I've tried and I've found no contact information for the station other than by snail mail.

This is one song I didn't have in my collection but as best my old memory serves this is the original:

I found another version on YT which is definitely not the one I heard many years ago on Top 40 radio:

It was a re-sing, probably found in a bargain bin at Wal-Mart. That was common with 60s artists. On one of our local oldies stations, I heard a re-sing of "Over You' by Gary Puckett (probably not the Union Gap). Aaaarrrgggh!

If a hit from the old days does not sound right, it is probably a re-recording by the original artist, by new members of the original group, a cover version, or a lackluster stereo album version of a great sounding mono single. Version curation is necessary to get it right (if that is important).

This brings up an interesting thing. Once everyone who was alive when the original hit version has passed away, it is up to history to curate. Are we listening to original hit versions of songs from the early 1900s? Pragmatically it might not matter much, since there isn't a large audience for them today. And that audience may not need to hear the actual original version to be happy. Sometimes the past is seen through the lens of the present.

Additionally, sometimes the "correct" version is determined by age demo. "My special angel" correct version may be Bobby Helms, Bobby Vinton or the Vogues.

The version from the “Best Of” album is the original.

I had never heard the version in the second clip before, but IMHO it’s a pleasant Soft AC re-sing by Vinton.

That's the one KTUC is playing. There's no excuse for this on such a conservative station. The only other AC-sounding songs are "Un-Break My Heart" by Johnny Mathis (Charlotte's Mix 106, a Stardust affiliate, used to play Toni Braxton's version when it was local) and one other I can't think of right now.

All of those are good for different reasons.
The "correct" version would be the original of the same artist. There certainly are covers by different artists. I would never say The Vogues singing "Earth Angel" was "incorrect", but the Vogues re-recording it would be.

If the cover is good, I don't mind. The Vogues have done some great ones.

Something I was just reminded of. While KTUC doesn't play AC songs, the commercials certainly have AC or even CHR. There's some glitch where I'm getting classic rock but no words, so I don't know if there's supposed to be a commercial there.
