I listened to both the Blue Rocks on 89.7 WGLS and the Orioles game on WWTX 1290 the other night. It was good to hear the Baltimore announcer, forget his name, who was doing the play by play back when I rode the board at WNRK when my show would be pre-empted for the game.
An interesting difference between the Blue Rocks game and the Oriole game - you could not hear any crowd noise at all on the Blue Rocks game, which is odd as you always heard it on AM 1290 in the past. Those stadiums are not that big so the crowd is right below the radio booth. It loses something just hearing the announcer and no other noise at all. Kind of dry. This was a bit of a disappointment as one perk to listening to the Eagles games on 94.1 WYSP vs WDEL is the FM brings out many sounds on the field, etc, that you don't hear as well on AM radio. The Orioles on the other hand had the same sound of the ball park at Camden Yards I remember and I found myself staying tuned longer to WWTX's coverage than WGLS's coverage. It will be interesting to see if this works out well for both WGLS and the Blue Rocks.
The Blue Rocks game that night (maybe the entire season) on WGLS was underwritten, remember this is non-comm university radio, by SEPTA as they promoted their Delaware commuter train to and from Philly. So WGLS has been able to get underwriting to pay for their coverage of the games. It would be interesting to hear how well that signal gets out in the rest of NCC.
