Blueberry/CC Sale Closes

All access is reporting that the Clear Channel/Blueberry Broadcasting sale closed today.  And now, the flaming begins (again)!

yugoidar - did u ever work at kcuf?

on the CC/Blueberrry thing... hey, local folks giving radio a try - who knows? it might work. best of luck to Lou and Bruce, with hopes that they do the right thing and put local radio folk to work. i hear Joe McMillian is still on the beach.

What is the best way to reach Louis? Does he have an office in Kennebunkport? How did he do when he previously owned stations?

I can put it this way (to avoid fear of losing MY job). There are fewer people here today than yesterday. So much for local ownership!

Today, actually yesterday, some of my friends were released from a profession they enjoy. Which leads me to wonder... How long will I last? Friends of mine, who are very, very talented, were cast out of facility where they honed their talents, where they cut their teeth in a business that is clouded in uncertainty.

Radio as a whole has a tentative future. I was in the group that thought the death of local radio was foretold when the first (that I experienced) blood letting took place when I was still a newbie in the biz. To be honest, it scared me then. And even though, I'm across the street and down the road a bit from the carnage at both sites, that same feeling crept up on me last night on the ride home.

I'm, humbly, good at only a few things I do. My on air work could use a little polishing, my voice over work could be better (if I ever got any) and my production isn't all that bad. Then I looked at a list of those who left... Really, Really talented dudes (and dudettes, respectively). And it makes me wonder, how long will I last when a talent pool of such magnitude was capsized and those uber individuals are left to wade through the muck left in the wake of corporate radio. Will this massacre set the precedent of new radio? With the thought process of why pay five people to staff a radio station, when we can make one person oversee the day to day operations and voice track the sh*t out it. Would that draw people to listen to your station? Would it make the station sound better? Would it increase revenue? Those are questions that I don't have the answers to. But I do know, the times, they are a-changing.

My hope is that the incredibly talented individuals that were affected by this regime change will not just let their talents go unshown and sit behind a desk selling insurance or jockeying a cash register. Programmers, Jocks, Production Wizards and a boatload of funny peeps, set a-drift on a path that hopefully leads them to something they enjoy.

My best wishes to you on a future well spent.

no sarcasm intended in any way in this post.

it's too bad that the ownership transfer resulted in that many jobs lost for talented professionals. i had higher hopes for Louis and Bruce.

now i read that Jack O'Brien will oversee ops and such. i hope Jack is ready for one of those infamous "standard" 12-hour days i've heard about that are associated with Louis' operations.

my thoughts are with those facing a not-so-great time of finding a broadcasting gig

With respect to Big Daddy and his thoughts here are a couple of points:

1. Don't sell yourself short you are a talented guy, just apply yourself and you will survive.

2. Anyone who didn't see the slice and dice coming down the tracks, I'm sorry but you had to see that coming.

3. Talented people who want to work will always get a gig.

4. People who are not willing to work but think they are talent will always struggle.

5. Jack O'Brien great guy but with those staff limitations all I can say is good luck!

xxoo

All of us at Cumulus are empathetic to those that have lost their jobs; most of us have been there at one time or another. Some of us are CC survivors. But listen, there really should be no surprises with all of the recent developments. Given the current economy, Blueberry management is resorting to crisis/survival/play it safe mode...they are not stupid. They've assessed the situation and studied the Profit & Loss Statement time and time again. They know what they'll need to do to get to the next level. Call me the optimist in this post, but I believe jobs will become available again for those who are patient.

Think before you post...burning bridges is never a good idea.

Jack BladesDon't sell yourself short you are a talented guy, just apply yourself and you will survive.

Thank you Jack. I appriciate the kind words. Need any voice work done? ;) Kidding...

Does anyone know if any local company or individual has thier eyes on WFZX or WGUY?

As a sidebar, I think WFZX with the Alt. Rock format could work if given proper imaging, promotion and supportive sales staff.

second comment first.......agreed, the imaging sounds like they just cut off the "classic" part of sweepers when they rebranded from a classic rock to the modern rock (I even heard a "rock that rock" sweeper that sounded weird)

first question..........I'll throw out a company...the group behind WKTJ in Farmington/the former Mountain Wireless group in Skowhegan (run by a former Citadel GM) or maybe even Citadel buys the stations?

I heard there was quite a purge at 'TOS, all gone save the morning show. Chris Rush in particular deserved better than that if true, HUGE following. What's the status of Steve "Reverend" Smith?

Hey There,

I am writing this on very little sleep and I'm not really sure how to say it all. I feel that it's important that one of us says something to all of you who have shown us so much support. Tomorrow, Rev and I will be heading up to Moosehead Lake, with the kids, to get away, go fishing and swimming and hopefully remember who we were before TOS. We'll be away from the internet for awhile.

Many of you have written to ask what happened--and I've tried to answer you all individually however, there's not enough time before we go.

On Monday, we had a great Rock Relief Show!! The bands were so awesome..I'm sure if you were there, you agree!!..and if you ever get a chance to see "Civil Distubance", "Vegas Temper", "Twisted Roots" or "Prosect Hill"..you should. They are all worth a night out..and more!! :) I know we raised a bunch of money for Camp P.O.S.T.C.A.R.D., which, aside from having a fun time with you guys, was the goal.

On Tuesday, around 3pm, individually, Rev, Rushie and I were told that Blueberry Broadcasting--the Maine owned company which purchased us from ClearChannel--had decided "not to retain us". We were escorted out of the building, one by one, without even a chance to get our personal things from the offices we had worked in since the building was built, in 2000. We were told our dismissal had nothing to do with our performance, but rather that it was "a numbers game." ....and that was that.

There is so much to say to you..and I know later I'll wish I had said more- or organized my thoughts better...but again, we're heading up north and I wanted to say something to you now.

We really did work hard to make TOS a fun place on the radio for everyone to escape to. We had a blast with all of you! How about Dead Season, huh?? We love them and wish them the best!! :) We loved your phone calls!! Some of them we would listen to over and over and laugh!! You made our days and nights, too!! I always felt very humbled to sign a shirt or hat--haha!! I had so much fun with you!!

Clearchannel was good to us. Blueberry has decided we're not worth keeping...

More than the job thing, though....way more....I am heartbroken. I will miss sharing my days with you..and quite frankly, I am stopped in my tracks.

We'll figure it out though--We will!!...

... I am stuck with k-rock in NYC all summer Blah... :'(

I wish I was up in VT to listen to probably what might be the last days of good radio with a great following
I remember the old calls:
Serving Maine NH Vermont and points unknown...

anyone want my job?
I scrub toilets at a beach for the summer...
-OZ

Thanks for sharing that, Jamie, I'm guessing that was from "Mrs. Rev"? Just had occasion to hang with them a bit on two different occasions over the last couple of weeks, adjacent booths at one event, then ran into them at the Bryan Adams/Foreigner show in Augusta, freakin' shame, good people.

I forgot to say that was from Jessies Myspace Blog.. I ran out of time to edit as usual my bad...
But seriously... this can;t be good. I though radio was supposed to "Serve in the local interest" How can you if you just go mainstream playing the same tunes like every other rock station in the country and with no jocks. oh geez

I bet the Blueberry Augusta office is one lonley empty place these days, who was canned from the other stations? Most of them pulled double duty on the other stations, I think Jessie was on Star 101 and 102.5 The Peak (and at the same time sometimes)

It'll be an interesting ratings book, that's for sure.

I think we all cringe a litle anytime a broadcaster loses their gig. It's the same feeling as watching someone on TV getting kicked in the nuts. Best of luck to all who are on the beach. Most of us have been there and hopefully you won't have to move to continue your craft.

I'm not within earshot of any of the Blueberry stations.I was checking out their websites and for the most part there is very little airstaff listed.Have these websites been updated or was it like that before the sale too?

The mountain Wireless stations sound pretty good.If they're not interested how about Stephen King trimulcasting WZON? Between 102.1 & 101.7 they cover quite an area.Seems like the possible increase in ad rates putting the Z on fm would help pay for the stations. How many other LOCAL possibilities are there for these two stations?
Is there a music format that would work for a new owner that would pay the bills?
If the Mountain or the Zone don't buy these stations then it will probobly be EMF!
