Blueberry's "New" Country Network - also video link

So, it's a couple of days in. I'm not a country fan but listened for a couple of hours today to the new Bear. WMCM 103.3 in Rockland, WLKE 99.1 in Bar Harbor and WBFB 104.7 in Belfast/Bangor.

On the plus side, it's a live morning show with former WQCB 106.5 morning host Paul Dupuis and the always listenable Kat Walls. They do well together and I'm sure will be even smoother with the passage of time.

The 10 - 11 a.m. hour is typical voice tracking with the Bear's old 10 in a row format with Kat voice tracking. She's just gotta keep the country and WTOS rockers apart. ;)

The afternoon is hosted by someone. Sorry, haven't heard his name.

Will Lia show up tonight for her syndicated slot? Probably, since she was already on all 3 stations before the switch.

Interesting thing that they do that I've never heard before is give the name of the song and the artist after every song with a computer altered female voice.

All in all, a cost saver for Blueberry, but really nothing new under the sun.

Where I live on the coast, all three signals are very strong. 99.1 and 103.3 would push a 4 out of 5 on my signal meter and 104.7 pushes a 5, so this is just making the airwaves even more crowded with less choice. Whenever I had the urge to listen to country, I used to tune into WMCM for the older country. <sigh> I'll just have to play my Johnny Cash CD's I guess.

Here is the link with a story from the WABI-TV 5 news from Monday evening.

The WBFB website (such as it is) is 'under construction'. Just like it has been for, I'm guessing, almost a year, since Blueberry took over from Clear Channel.

And as an aside, the WQCB website hasn't been updated since Craig Colson took over for Jodi Hersey in the news dep't.

Ugh. Yes, it's as bad as it sounds. I could understand doing it maybe on a no jock/music only overnite, but during live or VT hours? Whose brilliant idea was this?

AC 98.9 WSPA in Spartanburg, SC does this and has for quite a while. Is it the same voice? Maybe you guys can listen online and let me know. It was weird when I first heard it and it took some getting use to, but now I like it. It's a very popular station too that even shows up in my hometown's ratings (which is a different market with 2 ac's already)

I just listened to that station. The 104.7 voice sounds more 'metallic'. Might be the same voice, but definitely mixed differently.

Some of you need to wake up from the 80s. If radio stations are going to stay competitive, they have to do things that are new and different.

THere are a few stations around the country that have a voice announce the song/artist after each song...and they are all successful stations. Congratulations to the bear for daring to be different.

Plus, with a very familiar morning announcer (and so far, pretty good sounding team) the bear is finally giving the "giant" competitor a serious run for their money. Who knows how it will all pan out, but there are now 2 good country stations for listeners to choose from in the Bangor market.

The thing is, new and different doesn't necessarily mean better. This would be a case in point.

Very true, True Grit. And everyone has different opinion (especially in this business).

I think what they're doing IS better.

Sounds like a classic case of 'agreeing to disagree'. :)

Cheers.
