Blues/Spirituals

OK, I'm showing my lack of knowledge here...that's why I'm asking you: Is there a station in this area that plays BB King/Muddy type blues?? And what about Spirituals??

If I owned a radio station, I would play this music and I can't find a station that does this...and I'm talking about the good ole fashioned type of Blues and Spirituals..the kind that you feel WITHIN your soul...

Wish someone would get adventurous and offer us that kind of music....

Can anyone help me with a station that provides this kind of programming??? Thanks so much.

Sadly, there are at best a handful of stations nationwide doing either format. Your best bet would be XM/Sirius...

That would be a niche format I would put on AM. Not long ago, you could find real jazz on AMer's in Virginia and even over night on KMOX out of St. Louis.

There is a real audience out there today for Blues (small, but it is out there, particularly in Baltimore/DC) and to a lesser extent, Spirituals. That might be best served as a specialty show. Several big rap hip-hop stations have Gospel on Sunday mornings. Spirituals might work Sunday on a older demo leaning Gospel station.

For blues, try the American Blues Network (www.americanbluesnetwork.com). It's satellite programming available to stations. Sometimes called Southern Soul, most of its clients are in the south.

I like that idea. I think another good niche format for AM might be Folk/Bluegrass. This may be especially good for a low-power operation to get a 'new lease on life.'

Who was that? I remember when Annapolis' WYRE did a traditional jazz format for a brief period back in the '90s but I didn't know about any station out of Virginia.

I wasn't aware of this either. I remember in the early and mid-80s when I believe CKLW and a few other clear channel stations did traditional jazz in the evenings. The program(s) were entitled "All That Jazz".

I like the idea of sub-letting time on some of the smaller AM operations to specialty broadcasters other than ethnic programming.

The website for WPFW (89.3) indicates they have some blues and gospel programming. I've never heard it, so I don't know how good it is. I'd be surprised if WEAA (88.9) didn't also have some programming of that type.

Washington could definitely use another non-comm with a good variety of underexposed styles of music like bluegrass, gospel, indie rock, experimental music, international sounds, etc. Some cities have stations like that, but D.C. doesn't. Too bad Georgetown and DCU sold off their stations long ago, while U of MD's tiny WMUC gets attacked by (the imploding) WYPR. The existent non-comms in the area are mostly awful IMHO. Same-old same-old NPR/PRI stuff, endless talk, blah blah blah.

If you want to hear a really excellent gospel program, then check out http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/CR"]Sinner's Crossroads on the web[/url].

The real jazz in Virginia was on a 1450 AM station near Richmond/Williamsburg. Remember listening to it while I was there in 1991 scouting stations. Can't remember the calls.

While working the 4pm to midnight shift. 1993 through 1995, I would tune around the dial during the long drive home. KMOX was jazz, at least the nights that I worked. St. Louis has a long tradition of good jazz so this show may have been on awhile. Now they probably carry Coast-To-Coast AM like most other big stations.

Tampa has 3 stations playing jazz overnights. Two public stations and one commercial. Richmond has several full-time gospel stations including 100,000 watts at 104.7. Tidewater has one at 94.1. I know that some must be online. Try WMNF and WUSF overnights. WMNF also does folk and bluegrass shows
