Blute and Scotto: Publicize Air America on WRKO

What does it mean?

This monring WRKO's Blute and Scotto had some blogger on who is trying to hype his investigation of one of the investor of Air America.

But most of the time Blute and Scotto gave free ads to Stephanie Miller [ who Scotto used to work for], Al Franken who they said discussed the investor's problems on his show and Randy Rhodes.

They even mentioned that Air America was on 2 radio stations in the Boston area.

Don't think AA could have paid for all that FREE publicity.

In the light of all the rumored changes at WRKO I wonder if this was Blute and Scotto's "audition tape" for Air America.

It was great. It reminded me to turn on Stephanie Miller at 9 AM on WXKS - AM 1430 one of the Air America outlets in Boston.

Thanks B&S for reminding me about AA.

The tone was very negative and the focus was primarily on how "mainstream" media outlets have give AA a free pass with respect to all of the shady financial deals that were involved in setting it up. And, how different the coverage would be if it were a conservative network in the same situation.

Having listened to the entire segment, the following was clear:

1. AA has been bolstered by positive articles in places like the Globe.

2. AA's money has come from some really "interesting" places, some interesting enough to warrant an investigation by NY Atty General Spitzer. and,

3. Blute and Scotto do not feel threatened at all by the presence of AA, which has clearly been a non-factor in the ratings.

It was no audition tape AND if AA is happy with THIS kind of publicity - they're hurting even worse than we all think.

Don't Mention The Competition ! There is No Such Thing As Bad Publicity

No! It means that since there is NO PD, Mike Elder, or EP, Rick Carbery, at WRKO they can break the first rule of radio - DON'T MENTION THE COMPETTION.

Please, don't respond with,' well Air America isn't competition'. Seems that WRKO said the same thing about 96.9 WTKK.

And as someone once said, ' there is no such thing as 'bad publicity'.

I am sure that I wasn't the only one who was reminded by that segment to turn on WXKS 1430 AM Boston's AIR AMERICA outlet.

All the rest of Blute and Scotto's discussion was inside baseball. No one cares and attempting to add fuel to a very weak controversy only reminds the average listener that there is an alternative to right wing radio here in Boston at AM 1430 WXKS.

Given the ratings WRKO gets vs. the AAR stations, even if people "suddenly discover" them, 'RKO won't be quaking in its boots. It would be like the
Red Sox (200 + sellouts and counting) pointing out there are minor league
teams in Lowell, Nashua, and Manchester, NH, and some of the fans decide
to check out the Spinners, Pride, and Fisher Cats instead of going to
Fenway. No big loss.

Though it is true that sometimes giving "free press" to something can benefit
them. Scorcese's "Last Temptation of Christ" and Fox's "Married with Children"
may have gotten some viewers after religious groups boycotted them. Sure,
some people may have followed the boycott but for others it may have attracted their interest and spurred them to see the movie and TV show.

With all the pro-AAR mentions in the NY Times, Boston Globe, CNN, and so on,
you can see how the liberal network is doing in the ratings: "Not much...
you?", as they say on "Whad Ya Know". Surely mentioning AAR on WRKO
could just boost that (censored) up a _tenth of a percentage point_
to (censored--check out RadioandRecords to see ratings). You can find
WXKS and WKOX easily enough on the most recent R&R ratings--they're
the ones at the very bottom. Combine their ratings and multiply by
_7_ and you have 'RKO's ratings.

All true. But we are talking about them.

Nope, the discussion was only about "Air America". Affiliate names or locations were never announced. You would still have to look really hard to find it if this was the first you had heard about it. Believe me, I was in the car and listened to the whole thing. And, I would be the first to point it out if I thought that Blute and/or Scotto had done something dumb.

It was more like when Stern would rank on Imus or O and A. To say that it was helpful to AA or its local affiliates would be a real stretch. It is taking the entire discussion out of context.

Re: Don't Mention The Competition ! There is No Such Thing As Bad Publicity

Again, 'there is never any bad publicity'.
It reminded me to tune to WXKS AM to hear part of "Morning Sedition" and "The Stephanie Miller Show".

Every mention and every knock is a boost.
