BMI Licensing For Part 15..

Hi,

This was fun to read. I liked the part where they want the station call sign, and title of the broadcaster. Mine is "Chief Flunky".

Maybe a part 15 broadcaster should ask BMI for a complete list of all their protected works in order to determine if they need the "license". For $200 per year, I would like to know if I would be violating the law before I broadcast stuff, and need to obtain a license for it. It is also great that your have to keep a playlist for their inspection.

My reply is not serious! Just for fun.

Um.. If you use a computer playback system, I don't think that this would be too much of a problem.

BMI Part 15 Scam

I'm going to put up a PayPal page on my website that asks Part 15 radio stations and anybody who listens to their music, "So LOUD that the Neighbors can hear it" to pay me money for the right to do that.

I have as much right to ask for money from this as BMI does. And who knows, maybe some people will be dumb enough to send me some money too.

Ask BMI. Their broadcast fees were set by Congress in agreement with licensed broadcasters. It's then renegotiated every few years with the federal government overseeing the deal. That never included Part 15.

But it never hurts to ask for money via Internet. Sometimes people will give it to you. It's all in good fun.

If you've got too much money, by all means send some of it to BMI, but be sure you also send about the same amount to ASCAP too, or they'll think you don't love them. And probably send a scrap to SESAC if you're playing a lot of Hip Hop. It's just the nice thing to do.

We don't want them to be upset with Part 15 broadcasting, even if they don't actually have any legal right to collect money from us. Hard feelings now can lead to all kinds of personality disorders in these organizations when they reach adulthood.

What do you own that Part 15 radio stations might be using
that you could claim money due on?

Indeed. And anything outside of licensed broadcasters they can
elect to set their own fees, including Part 15 stations.

Yes. The truth hurts. And realistically, I can't see BMI spending
a whole lot of effort in enforcing license fees to Part 15 users.
Its not economically viable. But its their music and they can
charge what they want for its use.
