To bad we dont have any good ones in the HD board, if you say one good thing about HD radio, those anti-HD people will just go cry to the mods and they delete your posts. That is way I left this place. Someone needs to take control of that board and clean up that crap. Thats all I gota say. bye.

As far as the best goes, that's a tough debate. The best I've ever worked with was a guy by the name of Scott Richards. He was the first operator I'd seen use a "bleep" instead of a dump. There was a little half headphone hooked up to a scrambling signal generator that he'd time out with delay, but just cover the sound and not dump it. The audience appreciated hearing the length of "bleep" and filled in the blanks in their own minds. In addition to that, I don't ever recall hearing him make a mistake.
As far as myself, I've been working for radio stations over ten years. I'm not interested in being a jock, or having my own show but I love doing production. It took a long time for me to appreciate my own voice... or know how to use it. In the meantime running boards seemed to be work that is almost always availabe, and over time the pay has gotten better. Knowing how to produce spots, pre recorded shows, etc has made me more valuable to stations. I've also put together my own studio (like many others in our line of work) where I can do editing, voice overs and foley. Radio seems to get me the connections to people looking for my services.
Chuck, I'm not out of a gig at the moment, but if you'd like I wouldn't mind sending you my info... never know when the biz is going to change next (despite all the speculation).

Dylan Rhyder at KILT is the most proficient board operator I've ever worked with...ever. When I was at Big Texas Danchall doing the KILT show every Sunday she ran my board...she knew how to do everything and do it quickly.
And, yes, I've told her and the bosses at KILT how good she is.

by-the-way: i moved from angleton to an even smaller town...........it's awesome!
it helps me dig into my "roots" even deeper for show prep..................
by-the-way: if it weren't for rowdy yates giving me a break w/the help of andy waldrop......i would never have seen my biggest professional dream come true....working at KILT!

WABC, WFAN; WOR and WINS still maintain a staff of on-air engineers to run the boards. The only music station that i know of that still maintains a staff of on-air engineers is New York/internet based radio station WBXO.com which plays classic rock. Its probably the one of the few internet stations left that is not combo.

I've been told that I have a soothing voice. Probably not the best for being an on air talent unless I'm trying to put an audience to sleep. :-[ But it is something I'd like to try.
I've got to give props to Buddy Cantu. a.k.a.Buddy Guy, a.k.a Fortunato B. Cantu, III, who has been my Board Op/Producer/Confidant and friend for the past 5-years. I've actually known him since the old SUNNY days...Buddy first came to BusinessRadio650 and migrated with us to The BizRadio Network on KXYZ. Buddy is meticulous in his attention to detail, often arriving at least an hour prior to sign-on, just to make sure things are all set. He's also the band leader for the notorious BizRadio Network Orchestra and Chorus, and always treats our guests with charm and a genteel manner. Buddy's always good for an astute comment and counter point to my ranting and ravings, and you can also hear him as "Tontoo" in the Houston Sign Co. spot series featuring The Lone Ranger, a.k.a. Tom Carter. If you're going to mention the great Board Ops/Producers, Buddy's the best!

The first time I met Buddy was during the period in the early 70's that Chuck was referring to. Buddy was on the air one night on KIKK FM. In those days, KIKK FM was in the 2016 Main building on the immediate south side of the Pierce Elevated. A friend and I went up to visit with him. He gave us a tour of the station and then gave us some "promotional" records that were in a trash bin. My friend and I went onto the roof of the building after we left the studio and proceeded to "fly" (like Frisbees) the 45's down onto the Pierce Elevated.
Several years later, I ended-up assisting Grady Moates and his crew in moving the transmitter from high atop 2016 Main to high atop One Shell Plaza.
Then, actually worked for KIKK in 1980 and again from 1992 to 1996. I enjoyed my time there and truly enjoyed working with Buddy. He's a peach!
