Bob Bollinger is out as GM in San Diego

Many are wondering why an all staff meeting is planned for this morning. Why are corporate type people in town? Is this a good thing for the staff of CCSD? What is the fate of Bob B and our lad Brad?

Nothing to worry about - it's just time for Clear Channel's traditional letting of the blood, always a part of the holiday season.

This year they will introduce the new CC motto: "Clear Channel: Pioneers In Bad Economics"

It looks like the our man Bob B. is out as has been predicted on this board. Congratulations to the guy who never supported his people and has shown he is a very poor manager. Bob is being replaced by Ms. Debbie Wagner from CC Tucson. The word is the BBB (Belly Belly Brad) may be on his way out of town as well. HEY BUDDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So what do you really think about him?

He was GM at KYXY/KPLN when I was at The Planet and while he seemed like a pleasant fellow I never saw him as a leader and in fact they did a really stupid ad campaign for The Planet that was totally divorced from reality and made no sense at all. However, I must say that when Paul Menard/Irv Harrigan, who was GM of Shadow which provided my paycheck (although I was hired to mornings on The Planet and nothing more), tried to screw me over, Bob and the then-PD went to bat for me. There are a lot of managers who do a good job when times are easy, but when times are tight (and they've been tight at CC for years) there aren't that many strategic thinkers out there who can make a difference and Bob probably did as good a job at CC as anyone could. I suspect the new GM will be another pleasant seat-warmer who will warm the seat for less money than Bob did.

Contrary to popular belief, Bob DID go to bat for people and stood by them. He is one of the finest GM's I have ever worked for. In fact I worked for him twice at both KyXy and Clear Channel. At KyXy he was the reason that Yvonne Carlin was kept. Immediately after Bob left The dingleberry manager (Peter Schwartz/sales slime) at KyXy fired her after having number one ratings for 25 years.

But I must say I am amazed that Brad did not get the job, he and his assistant Joanne Walters were doing their best to run Bob off, those two were the ones that ran off Becky. But I wonder how long it will take for this female GM to get knocked up by another Clear Channel manager (after thats what happened to Kibler). Or how long before Brad runs her off, and Clear Channel finally lets Brad have exactly what he wants... Clear Channel San Diego. Of course at that point won't they be setting Brad up to faiil?

Let's see Brad's track record of success.
Couldn't sell KOOL 95.7 oldies so he wanted it killed
Couldn't sell KPOP so he wanted it killed
Couldn't sell KLSD (with a 2+ share) so he wanted it killed
Couldn't sell US 95.7 or Tony and Kris so wanted them gone

He created XTRA 1360 with a whopping 0.6 share and a bigger staff than KOGO
He created New Country 95.7 another over whelming success.

But hey fire Bob and keep Brad great job guys

Can someone explain why a company would feel it to be necessary to fire a guy
7 days before Christmas? Couldn't they have waited until January?

CBS did the same thing in Phoenix today (long-time air talent),
after they released two other long-timers in Phoenix and one
in Dallas, all last Friday.

CBS has become the Cheap Channel of radio in 2008.
Let's change their corporate name to CheapBS.

Dear 136kgb, I can't say I agree with you on everything you bring up some good points. trust me when I say B.S. (great initials by the way) won't be in San Diego for long. That clown couldn't sell kool aid in Guyana.

You know I could see Brad leading a cult to the jungle and calling the place Bradtown, but instead of poor people he would take former cheer leaders and bikini models and strippers, teach them how to make beer. I don't think the problem would come until they ran out of beer and the girls sobered up then they would make their own kool aid to get away from Brad......all except Joanne Walters. If she came at all she might be too busy getting Brad a free car wash from the CC car wash guy.

An outsiders view based on the postings in this thread-- I have nothing against Mr. Bolinger, or for that matter anyone else at CC San Diego. BUT, based on the negativity, back-stabbing and angst on this board, morale in this cluster must be a mess. I'd say a new market manager was a good idea.

Dear, lasvegasradiojunky, As an outsider you were very smart to spell Bob's last name correctly. The same however can't be said of CC who sent out a press release misspelling his name. What is worse making Bob chase all those good people out of the building, then firing him or firing him a week before X mas or misspelling his name in the release?

I asked Bob about the one 'l' vice the two 'll'.

He told me to always get the facts right; didn't care how his name was spelled.

You know Bob is a genuine class act! I'm sorry I am in the Bob Bolinger fan club. I respect the man to no end. I really hope this new lady is as good as she is being made out to be. Those folks at Clear Channel have been through a lot. They have been through 3 general mangers, and many rounds of layoffs, not to mention wage freezes. The people at Clear Channel San Diego are the best in the business. There are a few weirdos there that are not carrying their weight, but for the most part there are great people there. You can do your best to have an A-hole free zone, but you can never succeed completely. Bob just about had that place completely A-hole free (there are still 3 there! I wonder who they are ??)
