Bob Brinker returns to KABC

Good to see KABC bring back Moneytalk host Bob Brinker to L.A.

Syndicated talker has been on air here since 1980s.

KABC weekend lineup revamp looks very promising.

Where are you seeing this. I checked KABC's website and see no reference to him. Only the usual lineup of gold peddlers and snake oil salesman that they have on the weekends.

Ah yes. However I'm disappointed they don't carry him on both days (Sat and Sun) and on Sun they only are carrying two of his three hours. Besides him everything else was still practically "Specialty Programming" which I think translates into "Shows no one listens to but we don't care since we charge them a fee"

He decided to cut back to only Sundays early last year. Larry Kudlow does the Saturday time slot.

There were very few Saturday affiliates left at the time.

Brinker is a good listen. I hope WABC follows KABC's lead and brings him back to NY as well.

Besides Brinker, another KABC weekend add is Kim Komando--Saturdays from
7-10 AM PT (live), starting today.

Meanwhile WABC is moving in the opposite direction by adding yet another infomercial to the weekend lineup on Sundays at 2 pm immediately following the great Bob Grant. Grant is one of the few Laurie Cantillo hires that the new management hasn't yet undone.

It's interesting that while weekend AM radio airtime has sufficient value to the infomercial purveyors to purchase and exploit, station management is more than happy to throw it away. Not to mention that keeping your audience engaged on weekends keeps their dials tuned to your station and provides a great opportunity to forward-promote your weekday shows. Is KABC beginning to figure that out?

I never caught on with Kim Komando even at the height of the tech bubble when she was aired here from a few stations. I might give her a try if I can pry myself from Handel on the Law. I hated that digital doctor character who in my opinion was grating to the ears. Leo Laporte is the best.

You are so right about Leo Laporte. He is in his own class as a radio talk show host on tech. Still cannot believe that KGO dropped his great show. Kim is a legend in her own mind and very big in places like Davenport Iowa and Bangor Maine.

Leo IS the best. And he has Jeff Levy to thank for his career, since I understand that it was the latter's inability to negotiate the continuation of his KFI gig that left the door open for Leo to step in...

Maybe it wasn't his ability to negotiate. The guy was terrible to listen to on radio, he would give DOS commands over the air on editing batch files and most of his advice was incorrect.

With all due respect to your partner, I cannot listen to Kim but can easily listen to Leo.

Leo is a true pro.

Hence my point: "It depends on the intended audience!" Komando is likely to attract a more mainstream, less technically oriented audience, IMO. That doesn't mean she's less of a "pro" ... just that she's addressing a slightly different crowd.

My comments are geared toward the radio pro aspect of the talent, not the fact that one is talking to the lowest common denominator (Kim) and the other is talking to an audience of listeners who know computers and know software sufficiently to appreciate his extraordinary skills. I do think both Kim and Leo are honest folks and that is saying alot in this day of radio infomercial mania.

I think KABC is correct to air Kim because she can talk to a certain audience that does not appreciate the unique talent that Leo brings to the radio. For me the choice would always be Leo because he really knows his stuff.

The same can be said of Bob Brinker's Moneytalk show. He is a Wall Street guy who knows the ins and out of the business whereas many of the "financial" hosts are purely infomercial shills selling some high cost product that is probably not in your best interest.

I think KABC has made some good lineup changes on the weekend and that is good for L.A. listeners.

Honestly I don't know what changes you are are talking about. As we have informally shown, why would you listen to Kim when Leo is available. Last time I tuned into Larry on the Law it was the same Clinton bashing as he does on this regular show. So that was a no go. Then the endless Gold and Real Estate shows are completely un-listenable.

KFI has some duds too (ie the new Neil Servedra show is hell, Lisa Ann Walters monotone voice is the best remedy to insomnia), so if KABC only were competent to realize these weaknesses they could put on some better programming. How about Joe Crummey? At least he is entertaining and he must be willing to work for minimum wage.

Because it's about entertainment, not geeky knowledge or great radio pipes (which Leo has.) Kim Komando is more likely to appeal to a mainstream audience, IMO. But in the end, neither of these show will make or break KABC or KFI.
