Bob Connors Retiring?

Hearing talk of BC hanging up the headphones.

What's the scoop?

Clarification: He's apparently not going to be doing the Saturday Morning Open Phones show but will continue to do weekday mornings.

BC is definitely a radio legend in these parts--but if he were to hang it up---it would be great to hear Joel Riley take over the morning duties...

I agree.

I'm actually a bit surprised there hasn't been more chatter about this.

Certainly he hasn't hung the headphones over the microphone in total, but this is something of a unique shift for him and the station. First, he's one of the few larger market hosts that was still doing a six day week. Second, that show was really simething of his signature in the market. He began doing the show before 610 totally embraced the talk format during the day.

Is this the beginning of the end of his show? That's not known. It may be nothing more than letting the guy work 5 days, or a day off in exchange for a salary concession or letting the public slowly back away from the show.

BC said last Saturday morning that he is taking Saturday mornings off so he can take his wife out to dinner and catch a Friday night football game ever now and and then. Personal, Saturday morning open lines is one of my favorite radio shows, I mean favorite radio show.

BC will be very hard to replace on Saturday mornings because, as one of his listeners said on the show, "He has one of the highest rated shows in the country". BC did ensure his listeners that he was planning on staying on with WTVN for a long time. He will still be missed on Saturday morning, based as what one of his listeners said, "He is deeply loved". BC said his Saturday morning show is about the listeners and not him. That said, I can't figure out who will be able to
replace his shoes but BC is approaching eighty years old so he won't be around much longer. Like I said before, he is the Water Cronkite of Columbus radio and can't be replaced. The rating will tell the true story when he dose officially retire from WTVN.

Agree with much of what you said.

Yes, BC is deeply respected and literally loved by his audience.

Personalities such as Bob on the local level are becoming harder and harder to find.

With him having recently celebrated 45 years in the market (from what I can tell he came to TVN in Jan 65) he's an icon. And all but about 3 years of his time in the market have been at TVN, and since 1979 in the morning host chair (had his brief detour to WBNS in 73-76 that closed when the perfect partner experiment exploded and he went home to afternoons on TVN).

Yes, he is our Walter Cronkite and Paul Harvey all rolled into one. But at 76, one has to wonder whether he's going to futher balance life with the joy of the job.

FYI It's Conners. Not Connors.

My bad. No harm intended.

Guess that's what I get for being a relative noob to the market around here. LOL

Not really. There are quite a few who realize the guy is an underhanded goat. Those who do not are not aware of the facts surrounding the sort of garbage that goes on at WTVN.

Feel free to quote me on that, padre.

:)

You dug up an 11-month-old thread just to sling mud? Wow. Classy.

Bob Conners said a few months ago, on the air that he has so many months of vacation time because his bosses have offered it to him over the
years because he makes CC Columbus lots and lots of money. He was very clear that he didn't ask for this additional vacation time. It looks like CC Columbus will offer him any intensives it can think to keep him hanging up the mic. BC said that he won't be replaced because CC Columbus can't find
anyone at half his pay with twice his talent and so there is no intensive for them to replace him.

Also, make no mistake that he also still enjoys his gig after all these years. He said on the air last Thanksgiving that he is very grateful to have a job he loves. So, I don't see BC retiring if he can help it, even at eighty years old.

I'll bet they're offering him some really amazing intensives, what do you guys think?

There is no replacement for Bob Connors. NOBODY can even compare with him. When he retires, CC will hire someone way less than him. The station will make less money because sponsorships will go away. Another dark day for radio looming in the distance.

I'm sure some low level intern is being groomed for the position.
