Bob Crowley layed off at WBAP

I don't know why or anything. He was there like 4 years or longer? I guess it is a case of the annual March Madness at the station. Since it was a year ago this month when Scott Crowder got layed off. That is a real shame, as Bob's got a housefull of kids and is a damn good news man. Best to him in locating something bigger and better.

Why do people keep using the politically correct "layed off" instead of saying what really happened.
They were fired, plain and simple. Scott Crowder, Bob Crowley, BDH, the whole RMS, the house cleanings at Cumulus and Clear Channel were not layoffs. They were FIRED. A layoff implies you'll be coming back to work when the company gets back on its feet.
I don't know why these guys were let go, don't care. But they were FIRED.

I have to ask, doesn't getting fired mean that all non-compete clauses are immediately terminated and the ex receives no more income from the company? Since CBS is still paying Martin, that does not seem like a firing. Sounds more like indefinite suspension.

There's Fired, there's Laid Off, there's Terminated, there's Downsized, Right Sized, Canned, Severed, and Thrown Under The Bus. They're all about the same.
Texas is a right to work state, which means an employer can end an employee's employment at any time, for any reason, or for no reason at all.
Some companies will offer a severence package contingent on the employee signing an agreement. It can include a non-compete or an agreement to not speak negatively about the employer.
Others just say "Get Out, Don't Come Back; We'll Mail You Your Stuff".
Foolish ones make up bogus grounds that sound serious and negatively impact the former employee's reputation and delay unemployment insurance benefits.

Bob Crowley has been in radio since the early seventies. Enjoyed listening to him in San Antonio during the seventies and eighties.

He occasionally posts on these radio-info boards, so maybe he will post on this thread.

If a person is "layed off" due to downsizing, dose that really man they were fired? What if a robot replaced you at your job? Dose that mean you were fired?

I worked briefly with Bob Crowley at KVET in Austin back in the early 90's. What a great news voice. Silky smooth.

Hope he finds something soon!

I can't believe they let him go. Dan Lewis does not sound as good as Bob. Now I did hear Bob Morrison, he sounded good. They must be paying these guys less.

Fired implies the person lost their job because they did something wrong. Laid Off implies they lost there job by no fault of their own. The British use the there "Made Redundant".

If you get fired you generally will not qualify for unemployment benefits. If you are laid off you will.

I wonder what would happen if we went back to the 12-12-12 law. Would that help the current situation?

I just moved back to this area after spending a couple of years in west Texas. I too remember Bob from the SA days when I was working in that market. A similar thing happened to a good friend of mine in New Mexico not too long ago. Seasoned news guy with 15-plus years' experience... He's still under a non-compete so he can't even work part-time for the competition. Now they have a twenty-something part-timer ripping and reading for top and bottom updates...
I'm sure WBAP can probably just snag a metro part-timer to do the same thing.

Where is Mike Shannon on this topic? Suspiciously quiet.

Just trying to steer clear of personnel issues at home, so to speak! None of my business there, but I hope Bob lands on his feet. Great guy who I've enjoyed working with the last four years. He'll be missed.

Sorry for bringing this up after so long. However, Google tossed me over here when I went looking for Bob..on a whim. One of those "wonder how he's doing" days. We worked for years at WOAI.

I'm sorry to see Bob was caught in a downsize. Can anyone take a minute and let me know where he is? I'd appreciate any effort on this.

Thanks,

Johnny Marks

I hope Bob won't mind me saying this, but he's with Audience Bakery in Dallas, last I heard. That's Phil Hall's (former ABCRN and Oldies 94.9) startup national radio format service that was apparently created to siphon disgruntled and displaced affiliates away from ABCRN/Citadel (esp since ABCRN is dropping certain formats, and left some affiliates out in the cold with no notice.)
