Bob Dearborn

I was thinking about Bob Dearborn the other day and was wondering what ever happened to him. Then I thought how about Radio-Info!!!!

He was at WCFL for several years and maybe at WLS. What made him particularly interesting is that he went into radio ownership in the 1980's. He bought several medium markets stations made them sound great. He sold them and since has disappeared. Randy Michaels pretty much did the same thing for Clear Channel 10 years later.

Dearborn, Bob - formerly of WCFL-AM 1000, WFYR-FM 103.5, WJMK-FM 104.3 and WJJD-AM 1160, currently off the air living in Canada.

good source; includes email link/addresses for many Chicago radio folk....

Is that the same guy who wrote the meaning to the American Pie song? I think he had a late-night syndicated show from New York also.

He's the one! "Night Time America" ran on the RKO Radio Network...
and as far as American Pie goes, read more here:

I use to love that show. It was on here in Pittsburgh, and Youngstown, Morgantown and I guess all over the country for years. Too bad there's nothing like that around any more. Thanks for the link to Bobs American Pie thing.

Thank you so much for that link to the American Pie lyrics explanation.

My first full time radio gig was 7 -midnight at WLFH in Little Falls, N. Y.
Every night I would drive home and listen to Bob Dearborn on WCFL. He was like a teacher to me -a mentor. I learned, and copied. Even did long gold everynight at 10:00. When he offered the American Pie explanation on the air I immediatly sent him a self stamped envolope addressed to my station. About a week later it arrived. Like Bob Dearborn I was bombarded by listeners (ok maybe about a couple dozen or so) wanting to know what American Pie was all about. A couple nights latter I invited our mid day guy, Paul Villa, in to co-host a special on American Pie at 10 PM. We did a two hour special. We explained the lyrics and played the songs and groups that it related to. It went over great. A huge response. It was one of the most exiciting things I have ever done on radio. After many radio moves I lost the letter from Bob Dearborn and WCFL. I always wanted it back. So, once again thank you for the link (and thank you Bob Dearborn where ever you are)and the treasured radio memory. Who knows maybe I'll do another American Pie special some day!

Yes, it is. He did his "analysis" while at 'CFL in Chicago. Google "Bob Dearborn" and you can find a written transcript of it on-line. I believe he frequents this board occasionally, so we might hear from him. Hope so, miss him on Chicago radio. He would be a good fit on 1690, Real Oldies, or on True Oldies, 94.7 FM.

Re: Bob Dearborn - Nighttime America

We also had Nighttime America in Memphis on WHBQ-AM 56, an RKO station. That was indeed a great radio show. I recall Billboard magazine doing an article about Nighttime America and running a photo of Bob.

Where Are They Now/Re: Bob Dearborn

His afternoon show on WTAE-AM 1250 was great! They also carried his syndicated overnight show later on. Last I heard he was living in Toronto, but according to this post he is back in Pittsburgh? Perhaps he is the BOB in BOB-FM :D (since that format seems more like one of his put-ons than a serious one!)Welcome Back, Bob!

Bob was on CHWO AM 740 in Toronto not too long ago, maybe a year or so, hosting an early rock era oldies show on Friday nights. When he had Nighttime America, he was very generous about incorporating mentions of local stations into his show. In '82, he even visited my old evening show on WWYZ in Connecticut at the North Haven Fair before trekking back to NYC. He was a pleasure to have as a guest and it was fun to watch a true pro in action.

Pittsburgh stations at this point aren't smart enough to keep Stan Savaran employed, so I
have little faith that they'd be bright enough to snap up Dearborn.

Every city has probably one or two like him-good at what he does but nobody seems to want that type of personality jock any more. Where would you put a Bob Dearborn today? This is a hypothetical, since we don't know if he still wants to work or if there's a station and a city that he would be attacted to. Let's just say guys like Dearborn... where do they fit today? Or do they not?

Bob Dearborn was on that Sunday Morning show with Charles Ozgood this AM in a feature about American Pie which Dearborn famously interpreted. They showed him on the air at WCFL in Chicago introducing the song back when it was popular, a real blast from the past.

Saw that ,too. An excellent piece.

If y'all wonder where Bob Dearborn is at the moment, starting in July he's been at CKWR-FM 98.5 in central Ontario (the Kitchener-Waterloo area, with signal spilling over into London and Hamilton), his original home territory, doing morning drive.

Bob followed by Don Berns on 1250 WTAE will forever be my favorite back to back afternoon drive hosts. Glad to hear that Bob is back in the Pittsburgh area, now WJAS or someone needs to get him back on the air.
