Bob Dearborn

Glad to hear that Bob is back in the Pittsburgh area, now WJAS or someone needs to get him back on the air.

I heard him on line at that station in Canada yesterday and he sounded great but what station is he on in Pittsburgh? It's not WJAS because I called and asked them. Is he voicetracking the Canadian one or Pittsburgh or both? Is he just part-time in Pittsburgh? Where is he really?

Bob Dearborn, wow man! I got to hear him on Super CFL and much later at JMK. What a talent. My gosh, he was right in there with Lujack. Maybe it's just my age (56 and holding) but I think Larry Lujack was the best I ever heard come down the pike. Landecker and many others right in there also. I guess you could take the 60's, 70's and 80's Chicago radio and those guys were the cream of the crop. All of them both guys and gals, news and personalities. Damn I do miss that kinda radio.

I also want to add Jeff Davis to that list of brilliant talents. I listened to Jeff when he was weekends and later on at nights on WLS. His interviewing style is second to none and his on air performance was magnificant. While Jeff and I have never personally met, I credit JD for having inspired me to go into the v/o biz back in '97. I'd just gotten blown out of a job Christmas Eve week of '97 and I was really down on my luck. Then I discovered the internet thanks to my wife!!!!! Out of the wild blue I e-mailed Jeff and he not only answered he continued to correspond until I was more or less back on my feet. I hope Jeff is doing great. I know he's a huge success. He has certainly been a v/o hero to me. Thanks to Jeff I discovered a whole new revenue stream. I've made some pretty good dough in v/o because of Jeff's kind heartedness that Christmas week in 1997.

Dearborn's last day on WCFL was excellent. There used to be an aircheck of it on Reel Radio.

Bob is in Canada. He is not on the air in Pittsburgh. He was living there between radio jobs because that's where his wife is from.

I called Dearborn at the station in Canada but got his producer Bernie Sadlick instead. He said Bob was in Pittsburgh for a few years because of his sister in law's cancer that's now in remission. His wife wanted to be near her sister while that was going on. And while he was there a guy he used to work with who had become the program director at one of the stations wanted Bob to be their new morning guy when their present one retired, but he never retired. So Dearborn retired instead.... to Canada.... then quickly found himself unretired and back on the air. Now you know the rest of the story.

They are reporting on one of the Pittsburgh boards that Bob Dearborn got bounced from that station in Ontario recently although I don't think it has been unconfirmed. Anybody know anything about this?

From what I have read about the new Hit Parade Radio network about to launch, BD sounds as if he would be a perfect match for the station.

Hey KlunkLetter.... why don't you play matchmaker. Get the parties together and there could be a commission in it for you. Cash for Klunkie!

It was supposed to start around Labor Day.... then they said sometime in the fall.... now Rook is saying Hit Parade Radio will launch in the first quarter of 2010.

Well, finally!

"Hit Parade Radio announced that the Company will launch its 24/7 Oldies Radio Network the week of February 7, 2010 on Clear Channel Satellite."

There's a radio executive in the Windsor-Detroit area named Warren Cosford who sends out lots of info about radio people. I'm on his mailing list. Today one of his e-mails was about Bob Dearborn who has started up an Almanac online for media pros.

Here's the URL: http://oldediscjockeysalmanac.blogspot.com/

It appears to be a free service that has some interesting stuff. In his release to Cosford, Dearborn says:

"It's meant to be a service for professional broadcasters who need an accurate and dependable source for this sort of information, another online tool for the disc jockey's arsenal, an alternative to existing sources that I've found to be lacking in accuracy, inclusiveness and reliability.

"How many times have you heard someone on the radio wish a happy birthday to a celebrity who's been dead for years? Why are the typically spotlighted celebrities only from the Kardashian-Spears-Lohan-Simpson generation? Why are Canadian celebrities routinely ignored? What about stars of the sports, media and political worlds? Aren't they celebrities, too?

"Yes, my "this day in history" lists are long, but they're meant to be cherry-picked. Each is filled with interesting tidbits that can be tied together or keyed off for songs and bits.

"Because I think it's important to remember public figures who've had an impact on our lives, there are entries that note the anniversaries of their passing.

"These items are not just about music and showbiz either. To give some context, I've included important moments in world history alongside the showbiz items. Discovering that the 7-day Arab-Israeli war ended on the same day the Monkees recorded "Pleasant Valley Sunday" gives new perspective to both events.

"This offering may expand further in the future, or contract. It might disappear. I'm not sure. But I'd like to do something with a blog -- this new one, the old one, or one that hasn't been thought of yet. It's a way of staying busy, something fun to do in the absence of any appealing opportunities to extend my on-air career.

"I hope you'll bookmark the site and check back daily to enjoy or use the information, and to watch the blog develop. If you have suggestions, I'd love to hear 'em."

Dearborn’s almanac is a good read. Everyday I find something interesting in it and something about music I did not know. I’d rather hear him on the radio or online from somewhere but his website is the next best thing. I imagine people in the radio business find all his information helpful. To me it’s just interesting.
