Bob Fahnrich passed away Friday

Thanks for posting this, Wes. Quite a shock. As I understand it, Bob had a bad heart valve and was awaiting surgery. I'll miss him.

Yes! WEAF-FM were the call's for 94.5 when it was in Eden, FM to WLOE 1490. Wished I had kept track of how many call's have been on that frequency since 1972. I think WMFR, WSJS and WQMG are the only stations left in the TRIAD market with their original calls, I could be wrong and have known to have been many times?

I remember the station being WSRQ.

Just for the record, they've been WEAF, WSRQ, WWWI, WKLM, WWMY, WNEU, WXRA, WWCC, WGBT and WPTI.

Chimp,

You forgot one...WLOE-FM.

Later...

Very sorry to hear about Bob. I never worked with him but ran into him a number of times when I visited WBAG. He will be missed...a really good guy.

See I told you had known to be wrong from time to time. Thanks APE. WTOB has been off my radar for so long. How could I forget the calls of a great radio station. Guess it's time to grab a pad and pencil and work the memory bank. Back on track about Bob on this post. He would do afternoon's on WLOE and also do our play by play for football and basketball. Yes Rick he will be missed.

I've never heard of WEAF. Is that by chance an old set of call letters for Rush Radio?

If ya never heard of WEAF, your a mere youngin because those call letters are some of the oldest there are.
From 1922 to 1946, WEAF was the callsign of the radio station that became WNBC and the flagship station of the NBC Red network. This station is now known as WFAN (AM) in New York. In the mid-1970s, WEAF was the callsign of the current WPTI in Eden, North Carolina.

WEAF was the first commerical station. I have a book "Commerical Broadcasting Pioneer- The WEAF Experiment, 1922-1926. I was given this from the Gary Davis estate who was one of the owners of WHPE.

I should have suspected this.

Incidentally, when I lived in the area, my parents and I only listened to WFRC, WREV and WDVA. I had never heard of WLOE until I discovered Broadcasting Yearbook in 1982. And by that time the station was WSRQ.

Just to be clear, that station was in New York City.
