BOB GUTHRIE RETIRING

Heard tonight on WOAI's Spurs postgame show that Bob Guthrie will be reitring this month. After 53 years on the radio, his final broadcast will be April 24th.

One word: Legend.

Here is the official press report from WOAI.com:

http://radio.woai.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=119078&article=5286700

Bob was instrumental in getting the News Talk format on WOAI-AM radio in 1975. When I saw this thread, I was curious how old he is and that WOAI press release answered my question. Yes, one of the last few remaining class acts in the radio industry is going to retire. I recall seeing Mr. Guthrie participating
in Mass at the Catholic Church as a lay person I was attending in 1973. I was told he was instrumental in getting that parish started in the early 70s and that is because he is an entrepreneur.

I'm in Columbus, Ohio now but hasn't Bob been semiretired for the last few years? He hasn't anchored the morning new in years.

Bob holds down the midday shift, which is a lighter load than the AM drive shift. It consists of news breaks during Beck and Rush.

A true gentleman, a class act, and a wonderful voice.
I love the story about how he got into the home-building business.
Wish I could stay in one place as long as BG, Billy Mac or Henry Guerra did.

I just want to take a moment and wish Bob a great retirement. I worked with Bob for a number of years at WOAI and found him to be a real pro. One of the last real radio people. He had the talent to take him anywhere, yet he chose to stay with one station, one company, in one city for his entire career. Good for you Bob. I also found Bob to be a really nice guy. He always had the time to listen when you needed to talk and he always showed me and my family the upmost respect. I even remember Bob helping move me and my family to a new home after we both got off the air one day. A class act for sure. Bob enjoy your retirement, you deserve it.

forced retirement. people in radio don't "retire". is talking to much work??

Woah. Dude. You really think after 53 years in radio, he isn't entitled to a graceful exit and a comfortable retirement? He's one of the few of us who has achieved it. He could have done it a few decades ago, if he had chosen to.
If you had better information you'd know that a pro like Mr. Guthrie does more than just sit down and talk. It's too bad you never got to hear his "Newscasts" at the Rotary Club meetings, or saw him in the station in the early hours doing prep before a morning newscast.
I like to post snarky flames as much as the next guy or gal, but you're not really adding anything here.

I was one of the one's that had the rare opportunity to work with such a class act and we should all strive to be just like him. Best of luck Bob in your retirement. You will be missed in SA Radio.

If you don't like it, turn the channel.

Turn the channel? What kind of dredging equipment will I need for that?
I'd rather stay here and have you explain why WOAI, the top rated station in S.A. in the last monthly trend, is doing such a bad job... or why KTSA, which has an incredible power rating, is so awful.
What are your ideas for KTFM? How would you knock off KISS? And then that thing you said about how 102.7 could have knocked off KZEP. Elaborate?
In the meantime, show a little respect for someone like Bob Guthrie, who has acheived more than 100 radio wanna-be's.

Or maybe he decided not to renew his 5 year contract....
