Bob Kemp was the Jack Webb of national sports talk show hosts. He was armed with "the facts" and was better prepared than any sports show personality who has ever graced the airwaves. It has been five years now since he signed off SNR, and there has not been a replacement show on any
network that comes close to what he did.

Unfortunately, he's on one of the worst sports stations in the entire country - and few even know he's there.

KDUS 1060 is considered a complete joke here in Phoenix. If it was possible to be the #4 sports station in a 3-sports-station town, KDUS would be it. The station is a total non-entity.

Kemp's also directly opposite the #1 sports-talk duo in the valley (Gambo & Ash on KTAR 620) in the afternoons, so he's pretty much invisible here. It's too bad since I like his show for the most part, but if he was anything resembling a real factor in the Phoenix sports scene, KTAR or XTRA 910 would have hired him away from KDUS ages ago.

Why is KDUS so bad? How do you mess up a sports station is Phoenix?

Easy. Let me count the ways...

1. They're the local Sporting News Radio affiliate. By definition, that makes them #3. ESPN Radio is KTAR 620 (and then only Colin Cowherd on tape-delay, plus overnights and weekends). XTRA 910 carries Fox Sports Radio, Rome, and Westwood One's NFL package.

2. No local morning show - they run Tony Bruno. Bruno's good, but Phoenix is media market #12, not #212. A viable radio station should have a local AM-drive show. It wouldn't be difficult to beat out the ones on KTAR and XTRA, neither of which are very good. The last guy who tried on KDUS (2 years ago, IIRC) was brokered and had to quit due to health problems.

3. A minimal local-sports presence. They carry the NHL Coyotes, ASU baseball, and Nebraska football - no ratings-grabbers there. They lost the NFL Cardinals 2 years ago to KTAR.

4. An almost non-existant nighttime signal. 500 watts with a total cutoff to the south. I live 3 miles south of their towers and can get KNX 1070 clearly while totally nulling out KDUS. In fact, I can hear KNX as I drive south on I-10 as soon as I pass their transmitter building.

5. They're run by the worst group-owner in Phoenix radio: Sandusky, or as we call them on the Phoenix board, Gumpdusky. They run their AM stations as an afterthought (sister-station KAZG 1440, the last daytimer in the Valley, is even worse). They make their money on their 3 FM stations, which range in quality from decent to mediocre. But they're full-market stations, unlike 1060 and 1440.

There's no real need for 3 sports stations in Phoenix. KDUS could go off the air and few would notice and even less would care. But they keep haning on for some reason.

I was thinking about how good the above points were, and then I saw the Michigan Wolverine dig, and I about fell off my chair. That was priceless. If you knew how much I spent on educating my
two kids at OSU, you would realize that I just got my first dividend check on my investment. Thank
you so much.
Back to Bob Kemp, he needs to be where he was and that was on overnight where he had a clearance of about 400 stations. Of course, SNR has nothing close to it now, but he sure as hell
would have been a viable successor to Jorge Sedano at Fox if they had been willing to drop "happy
talk." Bob Kemp is not an ensemble actor. He is the star and the focal point. He seeks not to
entertain but to inform. Ben Maller entertains well, but Jason Smith and David Stein are a waste of
time. Somebody in Phoenix please slap old Bob, and tell him to get his career back on track. We miss him.

Don't get the idea I'm an Ohio State fan. I grew up in Bloomington, IN so I'm an IU fan all the way. The only time I cheer for either Michigan or Ohio State is when they play Purdue, Notre Dame, or USC. When they play each other...I'm hoping for a 0-0 tie. ;D

Gumpdusky must be paying him a boatload of money to put up with that disaster of a station. The only way he'll get his career back on track is if KTAR or XTRA hires him locally, or ESPN Radio does at the network level. I'd be surprised if he'd put up with the juvenille BS of Fox Sports Radio or the frat-boy mentality of many big-market sports-talkers. He's too cerebral - probably too much so.

Give Bob Kemp a multi-million dollar contract ClearChannel Bob Kemp

I've been listening to these recorded shows... Brings back memories...

remember him from the one on one sports days doing late night. he didn't take no crap.

He doesn't in Phoenix either - or he wouldn't if anyone was listening. ;D

Now he has both Gambo & Ash (KTAR) and Bickley & MJ (the former XTRA 910 morning show that moved to afternoons a couple of weeks ago) as competition. He doesn't stand a chance.

I liked Bob Kemp when he was on One on One Sports.

Come to think of it, but dang is it just me, or has no whole network around the clock been as good as One on One was back in the 90s? ??? They were always something fun and entertaining to listen to, maybe because they weren't constantly straight-out pimping their tv product or relying on the same people [and mostly ex-jocks] to guest on radio and tv most of the time.

Taylor to Dr Zaius "But he was here before you
and he was better than you are."

Depends on how long Gumpdusky keeps sports on 1060 (and on 97.9 KUPD-HD2). Given how many times both have been given up for dead, KDUS will probably be around as long as Sporting News Radio is around. I haven't heard anything about them letting Kemp go, but given the state of the radio economy, anything is possible, especially in Phoenix.

BTW check out KDUS daytime signal

http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KDUS&service=AM&status=L&hours=D

All the way to Mexico.......Son

I'm quite familiar with their signals. I live near their towers and drive by them twice a day.

At 5000 watts days and 500 watts nights, they have full metro-area, omnidirectional daytime coverage like most of the metro Phoenix AM stations. But their nighttime signal is weak-to-inaudible in outlying areas, including much of the SE valley since they have an almost total null to the south.

As I said in an earlier thread, they get overridden by IBOC hash from KNX as close as one mile south of their towers as I drive down I-10. If one drives further away, toward Gilbert, the KNX hash makes KDUS completely inaudible. I know since I've done it.
