Bob Lobel to Oldies 103

Bob Lobel launches comeback - on radio

Boston’s premier TV sports reporter Bob Lobel is making a comeback - on the radio.

Just five months after leaving WBZ television, Lobel has been hired as a morning show host on the FM radio station Oldies 103.3.

Starting Monday, Lobel and co-host Karen Blake will be running the 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. show.

Nice to see a radio guy go back to his roots.

What happened to Dale Dorman?

Read the other threads here about him. His contract for morning drive was not renewed. Apparently he will be doing a weekend shift.

We don't know whether this, at 65 years old, was his choice or not (but I heard not).

If Karen Blake will be Lobel's morning co-host, now what happens to June Knight?

So during morning drive, does Oldies become a de facto talk station? And can Lobel take this grind? In a few weeks we'll have Bing Crosby following RS/Pats conversation.
Good luck Bob.

Can you say SUCK?

Half In The Bag Bob at 6 in the Morning outght to be rich.

Karen Blake's job will be to keep the smelling salts handy.

June Knight isn't a co-host, she's a newsreader who contributes a little extra smalltalk. Expect her to contribute zero smalltalk if and when Karen and Lobel (or Karen and whomever) get into the swing of things.

In return, Channel 4 gets Dale Dorman as a new sports anchor....

It is what it is. A bandaid move made by a suit who can't figure out what to do with the station's format. Revere School of Broadcasting meets The Rainman. This is going one smooth pair-up. Can't wait to hear how many times she'll call him "hon" in the first five minutes.

I don't think putting Karen on in the morning is a huge surprise. She did a great job when she filled in for Dale. I just wondered if management did put her on in the morning who would they put her on with - now we know! If Karen is going to be running the show (and I am guessing she is because that's what she did when she filled in) then she's going to have her work cut out for her because Lobel seems to go off in strange directions There were times you'd see him on a newscast and he'd through his papers up in the air and just ad-lib crazy things. I do wish Karen well. Just curious though, are there any other females that run the show in a music format or are most of them sidekicks?

And she'll call June Knight and/or Kay Erickson (the woman doing the traffic reports) "Toots"....."Hey Toots, nice job on the news this morning" ::)

Let's keep in mind that Lobel is being called a "guest co-host", not a co-host. The Herald article says he will be on for the fall season.

Maybe that's when Ralphie Marino's contract expires up at WERZ and then he'll come back to Boston and re-join Karen on "The All New Oldies Star Morning Show" :D

Julie Devereaux on WROR, Paula Street on Oldies, Nancy Quill on Magic

I actually meant in a Morning show capacity.

Too funny!

Now I'm going to listen for it!

I liked that show. Ralphie could be a little annoying at times but together they were entertaining.

Yeah, no real shocker. I think when they put in Karen and JJ they were thinking of putting one of them in for Dale at some point.

Forgot about Toots :)....You know she'll start off their first day together : "Hey, Ralphie...Where da frig have you been?!"

Ralphie, Karen...Fast Freddy is already working down the street. It could happen.

NewsRadio 103.3? or Sportsradio 103.3? Lobel, pick up Ordway when his 'EEI contract is up,
heck get that young guy Eddie Andleman too :)
(btw one of Eddie's sons was co-hosting a bit w/ McPhee tonight I think)

Sports 103.3: The Patriots (pry them from sister WBCN?), The Bruins, ESPN (raid it from 890/1400?), and local sports talk!
Eh, maybe not...anyway there has been speculation about news/talk or sports on FM from CBS, so...

Pretty sure Entercom would make a big stink if they were to call it SportsRadio 103.3. With SportsRadio 103.7 already on the dial and covering lots of the same area as 103.3, this is not something CBS would mess with.
Speculate all you want, but WEEI is untouchable even if Ordway foolishly decides to leave for a start-up sports station. WEEI will still crush them in revenues with hands tied and eyes blindfolded. No GM in this market is so desperate or dumb enough to risk a bad move like that.

You can't build anything sports-related and compete with Lobel as your major personality on any start-up. This is not 1991 and Eddie is the only guy in town who's done sports talk for 20 years. Lobel's track record was never about about sports broadcasting. It was about ripping off Warner Wolf's highlight bits and yakking it up with Liz. That catered to non-sports fans.

Andelmans were promoting their big pigout on Lansdowne St. today. 96.9 sells them time and gives them lots of promo opportunities like co-hosting with angry Michelle and plenty of free plugs for their restaurant review mafia operation on all their other shows.

Speculation is always seen as ridiculous on these boards but I think something could be up here, whether it pertains to Lobel's arrival at WODS or not. It will be interesting to see how WODS, WBCN, and WBZ-AM all fare under PPM... realistically, it might finally be time for Boston's usual #1 12+ station to make its way over to the FM dial. At the same time, should Lobel's morning show become a success, and already having the Sports-leaning T&R, Pats, Bruins, and ownership of WW1 in the arsenal, perhaps a CBS-owned sports station isn't too far off either, maybe on the 1030 blowtorch?

Just throwing out ideas, but it doesn't seem that Boston's fascination with sports is going to end any time soon. And CBS and Greater Media are the only companies with the resources to give WEEI a serious challenger.
