Bob Lonsberry fired from KNRS

Says he was fired from KNRS in Salt Lake City in today's column. CC told him the People Meter ratings were the reason.

It may be the new upper management at CC Rochester made Lonsberry an offer he couldn't refuse and Mr. Lonsberry "selected" WHAM as his sole station.
The Voice of Reason said:
Yet the guy manages to attract an audience in Rochester. What does that say about this community?
It says a station that pulls a 10 share has 90 shares not listening. Most radios have a tuning knob. Amazing, the number of people who know how to use it.

-9-

KNRS finally listened to his broadcasts on WHAM. He is much more off-color in NY than in SLC. KNRS claims to be a "Family Values" station, but Bob talks about 'boobs' an awful lot in NY. On top of that, he has been married 3 times, and excommunicated TWICE from the Mormon Church. Doesn't sound like he has a lot of family values to me. That is why his ratings fell, and why he was fired.

According to Scott Fybush's web site, Lonsberry is upset that his son was also canned.

Did Lonsberry really think that the SLC station would fire Pop and keep the kid?

Lonsberry was also quoted as saying that the bulk of his salary came from the Utah station. He once told his audience on WHAM that he was paid $136,000 a year (and that was a few years ago when he made that statement). So now I wonder if he was referring to both stations or just what he was making at WHAM?

On another note someone who listens to Lonsberry told my boss, who informed me and a co-worker, that Lonsberry was making fun on the air of Kevin Legrett.

This guy (Lonsberry) must think he's irreplaceable. ::)

"On another note someone who listens to Lonsberry told my boss, who informed me and a co-worker, that Lonsberry was making fun on the air of Kevin Legrett."

I'm obviously in no position to hear, much less comment, on what the guy may or may not have said. (I'm otherwise occupied that part of the day.) But in the event he DID say something to that effect....do you think he might have heard LaRoux's "Bulletproof" and think she was singing about him? ;D

You don't bite the hand that's feeding you. If you're holding down a job in any organization the least you can do while you're there is be civil and respectful to the folks you're working with and for...

C'mon, guys, Lonberry thinks he's the anti-hero. Legretts gettin' a little press, and what better way to get his "fans" to identify him than by taking on "the man". Trashing Wall Street is "in" this week, and Kevin's as close as Lonsberry's gonna get to Wall Street. Legrett's probably thrilled if anybody's saying anything about him on the air.

For decades on-air talent has ridiculed management on the air. It's radio's equivalent of "professional wrestling" (and yes, I know that's an oxymoron.) The audience loves to hear their favorite personality make fun of "the boss." It evokes the response "wow, that's so cool, I wish I could get away with making fun of the boss in front of a live audience." In many cases the "ridicule" is done with the connivance of management, who enjoy the attention.

I haven't heard anything Bob has said about Legrett or anyone else. But what's being reported here and elsewhere is absolutely tame, compared with things Imus has said, or what famous Pittsburgh morning team Larry O'Brien and John Garry used to say about Ted "Cap'n Showbiz" Atkins. They didn't just read his interoffice memos on the air. They'd read his DWI arrest reports.

I don't think anything Lonsberry has said on the air about management has much, if anything, to do with what's going on.

DISCLAIMER: The above account of the Atkins DWI arrest reports may have been apocryphal. I never heard that one on-air firsthand, just tales about it. But I did hear a lot of other stuff even funnier. OB&G were probably one of the most cerebral and hilarious morning teams in the history of radio.

And this guy "Savage" want's credibility- :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

HDBG

(guess I won't be working at WYSL anytime soon)

HDBG, it sounds like he's got the CYA part of his job down.

Oooops. There goes my job at WYSL. Damn!

Recently, a Citadel Buffalo sales rep was heard saying about Mr. Legrett, "There's not a day that goes by that we don't miss him here... they don't know how lucky they are to have him in Rochester."

Sorry, HDBG and Rox. I thought the subject was Lonsberry, and was offering what I thought was an entertaining aside. It happened, just didn't think it was a good day to get sued, hence the disclaimer.

I'll let you guys get back to kicking sand in each other's eyes. And please don't fret about missing out on any gigs at WYSL. We haven't had a fulltime opening for six years.

Good day to all.

I was just about to ask if WTAE's "O'Brien" was the the same Kevin O'Brien that worked mornings in Buffalo at WYSL (Buffalo), circa 1964-65. And then... poof.

RCS's Lonsberry-O'Brien post was informative and explanatory. As it related the antics of O'B&G, it was humorous, especially when one considers the era, the market and personalities involved. WTAE was, IIRC, an AC giant; the GM was bigger than life; O'Brien & Garry were a cutting edge morning team in a market where Jack Bogut (sp?) and KDKA ruled the roost. I'd have to go to the archives, but IIRC, Cecil Heftel's 13-Q was making waves (with Jack Armstrong); WDVE was the AOR leader and Z93-WPEZ, lead by a guy named Bob Pittman was on the tip of the spear doing Top 40 on FM.

Maybe I was the only person who understood the context of Savage and the follow-ups Heyday and Rox... or did I completely misread the nuance. I'm just sayin'.

It was Larry O'Brien of WCFL fame. "Cap'n Showbiz" Atkins was a legendary Drake-format programmer and a classic - and class - radio character. Thanks for the civil followup, Dr. Jim.

HDBG: just sayin' - I'm halfway through the first year in my FIFTH decade of continuous employment in radio. FOUR radio signals are now currently on the air in this market because of yours truly, which if I'm not mistaken - I'm sure you'll let me know if I am - is a record. So I'm not particularly interested in defending my "credibility" here or anywhere else. If my credentials don't suit you so be it.

Anytime you'd like to compare your resume' of accomplishment in this industry....bring it. Then we'll check the "credibliity tote-board."

Whew! Lighten up, Barrister. I think that HDBG was joshin'. Least that's the way that I took it. Damn message boards just don't have a lot of nuance.
