CENTENNIAL BROADCASTING LAUNCHES THE PLANET press release
LYNCHBURG, Virginia, October 11, 2006 –At 2:00 PM today Centennial Broadcasting, LLC. launched Central Virginia’s newest radio station. Simulcast on 101.5 WZZI Roanoke and 97.9 WZZU Lynchburg, "The Planet" begins broadcasting the largest library of rock music in the area, giving Central Virginia listeners a variety and depth of music not currently heard on existing stations while recognizing and celebrating the desires of the those listeners to hear a large number of songs without being over exposed to the same ones over and over again.
BOB-FM will continue to serve up “Good Times and Great Oldies” by moving onto Centennial’s WLEQ 106.9 FM and 97.3 FM.
The Planet will appeal to men and women of all ages and be particularly attractive to males 25-49, according to Allen Shaw, President, Centennial Broadcasting. “Although there is no particular lifestyle to The Planet’s audience,” Shaw commented, “the main thing they have in common is an abiding appreciation of a very wide variety of great rock music from the last 5 decades.”
“Almost all rock played on the radio or purchased for personal enjoyment today started in the 60s and 70s,” Shaw said, “Artists such as Jefferson Airplane, the Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin created their music in a way that has kept it popular and timeless for over five decades. Great new rock bands have continued to emerge until the present day Unlike traditional classic rock stations, The Planet will play album cuts and blend artists from every decade from the roots of rock to the present.” The Planet plays Everything That Rocks.
Beginning October 16th, The Planet will also feature The Bob and Tom Show, Monday through Friday each morning from 6:00 to 10:00 AM. The Bob and Tom Show is a syndicated radio program featuring comedy, sports and celebrities with lots of listener interaction. Bob Kevoian and Tom Griswold are an award winning radio team with five Marconi Awards and two Billboard Magazine Radio Personality awards to their credit. The Bob and Tom Show is ranked number one or number two in over 70% of its affiliated markets.
“We are excited to have The Bob and Tom Morning Show on The Planet,” said Harry Williams, Centennial Market Manager. “Their comedy is fun, entertaining and a great way to start the day. The Planet Plays Everything That Rocks and that includes Bob and Tom.”
“The Planet has been designed for the audience, not as a reaction to other stations,” Shaw said. “The sheer size of the music library will eliminate listening fatigue and produce a longer time spent listening and more importantly, a longer time spent enjoying. We expect listeners will say ‘it’s about time a radio station played all this music’ “
