Bob Robbins Retirement...

A friend of mine from out of state called and ask about KSSN and mornings. I quote, "What can you tell me about Clear Channel in Little Rock?"

He does mornings for a country station in a similiar size market as LR so I was curious. "Why do you ask?" I replied. He said that Bob Robbins might be retiring and Phil Hunt had contacted him about moving to Little Rock.

Now my statement! I do not believe Bob Robbins is retiring. No way in hades would KSSN let him go.

Now my question: What would KSSN do if Bob Robbins left? Who would replace him? Would they bring someone in? Would they promote from inhouse? How would that story play out?

Listen to media mogul - he knows everything.

I'm sure it will too! However, that wasn't the question. Should I use pictues so you can understand the question?

Let me rephrase: Should Bob Robbins decide to retire, who would replace him? Would it be a promotion from inside CC-Little Rock, or do you beleive management would bring in someone from out of the market?

With all do respect!

Phil Hunt is connected to KSSN (again)? I remember him from the 80's, I think, if it's the same one. He was good to work with then.

No -- just learn to be polite....

Being a CC station, that is possible.

I know I wouldn't want to be next to fill those Ol' Bob shoes...or the second, third or forth generation....maybe in about 10 years....

Bob Robbins was a big part of what made that station. If he goes, that will surely open the door for another country competitor, like say, 103.7??

Only if a real broadcaster got hold of 103.7...Seriously, it would cost a bundle to go after KSSN and not many companies would even bother to try (anyone remember the results that Citadel got with Country 102.9?). When Bob does retire, as long as they put on someone who sounds relatable, local, involved and personable they'll probably not lose too much.
Edited by TVJunkie10 on 08/20/05 06:00 AM.

Citadel blew it with 102.9. Think about it...A 50,000 watt stick in Sheridan going against 95.7 (100,000 watt in Little Rock) and 106.7 (50,000 watt in Benton). They were up against 150,000 watts of country. Then tack on the fact that Country 102.9 lacked a brand. They actually supported KSSN by calling themselves "Country". When you think Country you automatically think KSSN. Then Clear Channel (somehow) made a perfect move by flanking KSSN with Classic Country. That was the ideal move at the ideal time. Next, Country 102.9 lost it's focus and started attacking KSSN on the air. Never ever ever can a country station attack the heritage station verbally with sweepers and jock talk and expect to win over the heritage station's listeners. Never has worked and never will.

Turn the page..

If a true 100,000 watt stick in Little Rock came on at the right time, say when and if Bob retires, it would have a much better shot at making the dent. Lose Bob, lose lots of loyalty. 103.7 would be perfect to take on KSSN. Just don't try and go head to head with them. Find the hole and jump in. Then grow the ratings slowly. Just don't call it "Country 103-7". This was the biggest mistake 102-9 made. And the fact they had Joe Bob Hunter doing mornings. Invest in a real morning show, local, real and lives the life of the format.
