Bob & Ron's Radio Spots

There was an article in the Inquirer Sunday about the 30 year success of World Wide Stereo in Montgomeryville as a new competitor moves in nearby. There was no mention of their old advertising campaign, but I can't help thinking that the entertaining commercials by Peter Tilden and Rich Ross played a big role in the name recognition that built their success. It also took Tilden from an ad guy to the morning show at Ralk 900, then WYSP, and on to a long career in L.A. radio. I'm not sure where he is now - after a long stay at country KZLA in the morning show, when that station ended he did overnights at KABC but was laid off last year.

Anyone remember the clever "Bob & Ron" spots?

Of course above I meant "Talk 900" WDVT, Frank Ford's station, where Tilden & Ross did mornings for a short time (barely heard in their pre-sunrise power). And instead of just moving up people, too bad Beasley wouldn't bring in a veteran country morning host with local roots like Peter Tilden for XTU instead of moving up the afternoon guy. Haven't heard about his (ex?) wife's Tupperware collection for a long time!

Yes, those ads were clever. The one guy would totally over exaggerate what some product would do and the other guy would jump in and correct him.
Good stuff. Better than Joe Isuzu. Not as smarmy as the Isuzu character, just overeager to sell stuff.

A little known fact. There was also a WWS in the Showcase Plaza off of Street Rd., in Bensalem, in the late 70's. I guess WWS was a franchise at the time. I believe the guy's name was John who owned the location. I remember him telling me he wanted to share advertising expenses, just to have his location included in the radio spots. But the Montgomeryville store wasn't interested. Needless to say, the Bensalem location didn't last. He had this awesome classic Thorens turntable on display. It had an aluminum platter shell that sat on top of a cast iron sub-platter. IIRC, it had an idler wheel drive and an SME tonearm. Don't remember the cartridge though. Just beautiful.
