Bob Ryan is available for sports radio

I realize that this a pretty narrow topic, but Bob Ryan is retiring from the Globe. If he were to replace Gresh or Muttnansky on either of the respective mid-day shows, the quality of sports talk would increase exponentially in the Boston market. Any chance for a grass roots campaign? Let it start here!


As an aside to my already narrow topic, "Talkers" magazine rated the top 100 sports radio shows in the country and Toucher and Rich were not listed. The rankings were based on ratings, revenue, and sports content. D&C, F&M, Mutt & Merloni, and The Big Show were all included. They apparently don't consider them a sports show, which is what I have contended since the launch of 98.5.

I'd be happy to hear more Bob Ryan on the radio, but I can't see it happening.

A) He's retiring, he probably really wants to really retire, not move on to a new full time job.

B) Both sports talk stations seem to be trying to skew younger rather than older. Hiring 66 year old Bob Ryan doesn't seem to fit with that idea. WEEI replaced a fairly popular but aging host in Dale Arnold (age 56) when they put Mutnansky on their mid-day. My guess is they'd go back to Arnold before they'd hire Ryan for that spot. And the Hub doesn't have anyone over 50 on their air at all, at least in their regular weekday lineup (Mazz is probably their oldest host and he's 45).

Nice pipedream, but it'll never happen.
 
Eh, my sources say Toucher and Rich are #11 on the list, Gresh and Zo didn't make the top 100.

Repeat after me, retirement, retirement, retirement,... Why would a sharp guy like Ryan want to work for the bufoon-o's that run sports talk radio in Boston? Class guy will go out on top.

I'll give you there's no better sports talk than when Ryan is a substitute host, but really can't see it happening unless he really needs the money. He'll be golfing with Leigh Montville out in Winthrop.

He's not the retiring type. But he's had a difficult family situation. How that shapes his outlook who knows? I think he'll be all over Tv/radio as a free-agent.
 
Actually Art, Toucher & Rich are #11 on the Talkers Heavy Hitters list. They are ahead of The Big Show, Felger & Mazz, Mut and Lou, as well as Dan Lebetard, Colin Cowherd, Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, Stephen A. Smith, and more. They are also by far one of the youngest shows on the list.

So it looks like not only does the radio community think of T&R as a sports show, they think of them as the 11th most important in the country.

Or at least the makers of this list.

They were #11. Bob Ryan is too old for the Huub but EEI would hire him in a second and they are looking to replace John Dennis he could jump in there in a second.
 
Blackroc is right. Anyone who knows Ryan knows he has a lot left to say and he is going to say it. Even though he is retiring from writing a regular Globe column he is not ready for the front porch rocking chair. Look for him to write a book or two and make countless appearances on TV and possibly radio.
 
If memory serves.....Bob Ryan is already a regular weekly contributor to the NPR sports program "Only A Game"....in addition to his occasional appearances on Boston-area radio and TV.

Speaking only for myself....I'd trade Gresh for Bob Ryan in a New York minute!!!
 
Ryan will still be around on ESPNs ''Around the Horn''; I'm not sure he needs or wants the daily grind of doing sports talk radio in Boston..who needs that headache?
