Some of you may remember the bizarre and unsettling story regarding Mr. Sawyer. The short story is that he was convicted of stabbing his former girlfriend to death in a Brattleboro gas station parking lot in broad daylight. She had apparently left him and had entered a romantic relationship with another woman. At the time of his arrest Sawyer doing mornings at WKVT-FM (92.7 Brattleboro). Sawyer also had worked for some time at WTSA. He's back in the news, seeking to have his 40 year to life prison sentence overturned. A link to the Brattleboro Reformer article follows:

I think he worked at what was then WPOE in Greenfield for a time (early/mid 80s?). Also worked at WTSA in Brattleboro before going to WKVT. There may be/probably are others.

Before being relegated to small town radio, and prison, Bob was a DJ at WAAF, back around 1972-1974. He used to do a killer import show, on Sunday nights, too!!!

The Bob Sawyer I worked with at WAAF actually did an "afternoon-drive talk show" on what used to be WAAB/AM. He was on-the-air weekday afternoons between 1 and 4pm. Bob could be very outspoken and difficult to communicate with at times, but he ALSO was very informative and entertaining with his listeners.

I've actually got a couple of the promos I put together for his show in my "production archive tape library!"

He was also on WACE 730 in Chicopee around 1971 when they were a news talk station with CBS and WHYN was Top 40, well before WACE went the brokered religion route. That was back when the Vietnam debate raged, and I still remember him yelling to a caller, "You conservatives can't see beyond the end of your nose!" He must have been memorable, since I can quote something he said 35 years ago!

I recall WACE being an Oldies station, during the mid-70s, before going to syndicated superstition. You are correct, WHYN was Top 40, as was 1490-WTXL.

Local news talk probably never was the most cost-conscious format, and while their signal was/is killer in the daytime, the nighttime sign-off to protect CKAC/Montreal prevented this format from being all it could be. WSPR and WHYN were music stations, but also had pretty credible local news setups then. WACE played around with music formats in the mid-seventies, at one point calling themselves your "friendly, all-family station." Considering how wide the generation gap was back then, that concept never had a chance.

In the late fifties, Brad Davis of WDRC got his start at WACE. He was heard discussing the virtues of drinking milk. That eventually led to his hosting WTIC-TV3's local bandstand-type show sponsored by... milk! Many people still refer to it as "the milk show."

If someone would please inform me as to which prison he is in, I'd appreciate it.

Bob & I were aquainted during his WAAB-WAAF days through a mutual friend. I just recently learned of this horrible story and would truly like to communicate with Bob.

He worked at WSPR AM-1270 in Springfield, MA 1985-86ish. He was mid-day talk host and sales rep. He was shown the door when he wanted to dump the sales job. We were told he had done talk at WACE in Chicopee, MA. Not sure if this is factual.

Whatever happened to Bob Sawyer?
Was his sentence reduced?
Was he executed?

My interest is because Bob and I hung out for awhile when he was at both WAAB & WAAF. He was dating a woman friend of mine.
I found Bob to be a very nice guy in person. On the air, he could be a riot!
Once a guy came in to be interviewed as a candidate for Worcester City Council. Bob played him for about 3 minutes before confronting the guy with the fact that he never filed election papers and was therefore a fraud!
The dude simply walked out of the studio.

At any rate: I would truly like to find out what has happened to Bob.

According to the Vermont Department of Corrections, he is still in their custody. Vermont does not have the death penalty.
