If I'm not mistaken I don't believe that Bryant Gumbel ever worked for CBS. Instead he went to HBO where he recently celebrated his 10th anniversary with that cable network hosting a sports program.

As for the notion that "Perky Katie" could take CBS from the ratings cellar to number one is just absurd. Curic is playing NBC like a violin. When her contact expires in a few months she will sign a new contract with the “Peacock Network” for millions more than she is making now.

Why I am certain Curic will stay with NBC? One reason is family. With her current schedule she can be home when her children finish school for the day. Plus she has a good thing going with “The Today Show”. Why give both of those up for an uncertain future with CBS? Another very important point is while General Electric may not be nirvana, would you rather work for GE or Sumner Redstone and that gang at Black Rock?

Bryant Gumbel did the CBS Morning Show for a while joining a long line from Dick Van Dyke to Harry Smith. If the Red Soxs had the curse of the Bambino and the White Sox had the curse of Shoeless Joe, CBS in the morning has Captain Kangaroo's curse.

Yes, Katie is playing everybody like a violin. The sameway Rather and his agent played CBS and ABC and ultimately pushed out Cronkite. Now the evening news has Uncle Walter's curse and only Schieffer has a chance to lift it.

One solution: Maybe the networks should go back to having a journalist with gravitas anchor special events coverage and having some pretty face read news off a teleprompter in the evening. That's how it worked with Cronkite doing breaking stories and Doug Edwards doing the evening news (or Huntley-Brinkley doing the evening news and Frank McGee doing special events coverage). That's still how they do it in Britain.

I thought he now works at a TV station in South Florida? I think it is a CBS station in Miami. Can anyone verify?

Couldn't have said it better myself.

That said though, as someone to replace Bob Schieffer for the long-term cure that CBS News so desperately needs (And has passed up once before in another candidate), I'm going to toss the name of LESTER HOLT (currently with MSNBC but who once worked at WBBM in Chicago) into the ring.

Another potential candidate would have to be AARON BROWN.

Thoughts?

Most likely the former rather than the latter. Brian Williams has LONG since firmly established himself as THE anchor of the NBC Nightly News.

Why should CBS do either when former CNN anchor Aaron Brown IS AVAILABLE NOW?? All Les Moonves has to do is SIGN HIM.

Another name I keep tossing around is LESTER HOLT, but since he's tied to MSNBC, I don't see him landing the job despite his past with Chicago's WBBM 2.

Just my opinion :)

Now THAT is a BLAST FROM THE PAST.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, she was talking about, she was one of two NBC reporters (Robert Abernathy being the other) who were reporting LIVE from Andrews AFB the night of the JFK Assassination when Air Force One returned with the body of JFK & his wife along with the parties of JFK and LBJ (the latter who had just been sworn in a few hours earlier).

What do you think they were doing with John Roberts? Sitting on their hands???

Okay, so John Roberts didn't work out. BIG WHOOPIN' DEAL!! What they should be doing now is go after Aaron Brown instead (which they are not doing).

In short, CBS should just simply STOP MOPING AND DO SOMETHING to improve themselves!!!

About the two women:

Pauline Frederick reported on the United Nations for many years for NBC, as well as narrating documentaries.

Nancy Dickerson started as Nancy Hanschmann at CBS, then married (she was Nancy Hanschmann Dickerson for a few months, and Walter Cronkite threatened to charge her for the airtime needed to say her full name) and moved to NBC, where she handled some Washington reporting and did one of the network's weekday morning five-minute newscasts. She was very close to the Johnson administration and got a few scoops, including the naming of Hubert Humphrey as vice president.
She left NBC late in the 1960s, worked briefly for PBS (in the era before McNeil-Lehrer) and then set up her own unit to make and syndicate documentaries.

Holt would be an excellent choice.

Aaron Brown is actually a pretty good anchor, but not a good news show host. In Seattle at KING and KIRO, he did very well at a traditional anchor job -- particularly if you like a few snide remarks thrown in.

Thanks. After I made the post, I realized that I was thinking of another guy. The guy that works in Florida looks very thamiliar though.
