...That's the subject on an email that the mighty Osh is circulating to friends and fans this weekend. The detail goes like this:
Bobby Ocean On KFRC? Again? Well...
...not really, but yes...sort of!
Certainly enough for this Free Plug:
Got a call from my old pal Ben Fong Torres today. He has a pre-recorded weekend show "Backstage," on KFRC that really is excellently written and put together, and you should already be a regular listener, probably are.
Anyway, I'm on the show tomorrow (Sunday, Aug. 3), so that's why the pitch -- I want you to hear it. Let me give you a little background:
Since his early days (when Rolling Stone mattered) as Rock & Roll editor and writer of their Street Talk Gossip column, he was & remains an ardent fan of both rock and radio itself. He surprised me by being not only a Bobby Ocean fan, but also an admirer of many friends and names I also hold high.
And boy does he have stories. The rock stars, the power people, the EDITOR OF ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE in the 60s & 70s, c'mon. Yet, the most quiet spoken, unassuming guy you'd ever meet.
Eight years ago Cameron Crowe wrote and directed a movie --"Almost Famous," his Semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story, where as a teen, went on assignment for Rolling Stone Magazine and toured with a late 60's rock band while interviewing them. I have the unique honor of being able to say I sat next to Ben when he saw that movie for the first time. There I was, watching Ben watch Terry Chenas onscreen try to be the young(er) Ben Fong-Torres.
Trippy.
Ben liked it very much but was never loud or falsely invested, just quietly enjoyed the entire experience. These days never brings it up, but you can if you want. Then he'll talk about it...
His weekly program (the 2-hour "Backstage With Ben Fong Torres") on CBS' KFRC is heard twice on Sunday -- 7AM, and 7PM. It's filled with great music and stories --Ben brings stars into the studio, interviews them, then weaves their audio together with music of his own choosing and his questions and narration. Very listenable, each 120 minutes a keeper.
Sunday's two-parter starts at 7AM and 7PM, with myself among the touted headliners throughout.
* First hour is about the darker side (mob, bad money) of the early days in R&B recording.
* Second hour is about Top-Forty Radio, with air checks from Ben's collection. I only know he starts off the 2nd hour at 8 Pacific (AM and again 12 hours later at 8PM) with The Real Don Steele, and closes the hour with myself, quite an honor.
Listen Sunday if you can, should be an easy stream: http://www.kfrc.com/
I love showing off for you.
